CAC Baseball News and Notes:

Baseball Notes for the Week (May 4): Mary Washington topped Villa Julie 18-4 on Saturday to improve to 28-10 overall. Sophomore Kevin Foeman pitched eight innings, allowing four hits, to gain his tenth win of the season. The Eagles close out their regular season on Thursday as they visit the top-ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays in Baltimore. Salisbury posted a 3-0 week this past week and reached the 30-win milestone for the fifth straight season. The Sea Gulls also made an appearance in the national rankings as they are 14th this week. On Thursday, Salisbury swept the Villa Julie Mustangs, 4-3 and 10-2. Senior Mac Mollet picked up the win in the first game as he is now 5-0. Junior Matt Johnson had three hits while Nick Pegelow finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Greg Lemon added a two-run double. In the nightcap, Brian Shipe tossed a complete-game, improving to 5-1. Pegelow added three more hits,including two doubles while senior DH Rob Kassekert finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. In Saturday’s win over CNU, Kassekert and Brandon Mason each hit two-run homers to lead Salisbury. Salisbury finished the game with 13 hits, as Kassekert, Johnson, Mason and Alex Vitale each finished with two hits. Greg Lasinski (9-2) earned the win with 6.2 innings of relief work. York went 4-1 for the week as they are now 26-14 with four games remaining. Sophomore Justin Heller led the Spartans as he hit .591 (13-22) with seven runs scored and four RBIs. Sophomore Mike Welch continues his offensive roll as he hit .526 (10-19) for the week with eight RBIs, six runs scored, five doubles and one home run. He had 18 total bases in 19 at-bats as he had a slugging percentage of .947. Welch has moved up the single season rankings as he is currently third in hits (69), fourth in doubles (17), fifth in homers (10), and sixth in batting average (.448). Catholic ended the 2004 season at 27-14-1 by winning their last six games in a row, and in the process, set a school record for most wins in a season under head coach Ross Natoli. On Thursday, Bernie Dennis fired a one-hit complete game shutout at Rutgers-Camden. The senior struck out five and walked six while he was 2-for-4 with two doubles at the plate. On Friday, the Cardinals had season-highs in hits and runs in an 18-4 thumping of Columbia Union. Senior Dan Conway finished 2004 with 60 hits, leaving him one shy of the season-season record of 61 set in 2000. St. Mary’s defeated Columbia Union 11-1 in their season finale. Senior Tracy Vallandingham went out in style with a home run and two RBIs. Senior lefty Kenny Williams threw a complete-game eight hitter in his final collegiate start. Williams allowed just one unearned run in the contest, picking up his tenth career victory. He also struck out eight batters, giving him 103 career strikeouts. The Seahawks produced their first winning season since the 2001 campaign when they finished 19-15 overall.

Baseball Notes for the Week (April 27): Salisbury won two of their three games this week. The Gulls fell to Chowan, 13-6, before sweeping Virginia Wesleyan, 10-6 and 9-5. In the setback against Chowan, Trey Cobb was 2-for-2 with a home run. Nick Pegelow was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs. In the first win over VWC, Rob Kassekert went 4-for-5 with a double and five RBIs. Jason Lively went 2-for-4 while Pegelow was 2-for-5 with a double and a pair of RBIs. Pitcher Nick Dunk improved to 5-3 as he allowed three earned runs on four hits and two strikeouts. In the victory over Wesleyan at home, Greg Lasinski (8-2) went the distance, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits while striking out six and walking three. Pegelow was 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, and a pair of RBIs. Kassekert added a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored. York’s Mike Welch hit his conference-leading eighth and ninth home runs this week. His first blast was a walk-off homer to open the tenth inning in the 9-8 win over Messiah. Welch’s second bomb was the Spartans’ only run in the 5-1 loss to Methodist on Saturday. Catholic won four straight after Wednesday’s loss to undefeated Johns Hopkins. The Cardinals downed McDaniel on Thursday, swept a double header from Apprentice School and completed the week with a 7-3 win over Randolph-Macon. Senior Bernard Dennis went 3-for-5 with two RBIs while hitting his third home run of the season in the win over RMC. With 54 hits this season, senior Dan Conway is tied for second in most hits in a season in the CUA record books. St. Mary’s guaranteed themselves their first winning season since 2001 by going 4-1 this week. The team will host Columbia Union in their final game of the season on Thursday. Senior second baseman Tracy Vallandingham went 5-for-7 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored in the 6-3 win over Washington College. Junior designated hitter Travis Herrick went 4-for-5 with a home run, four RBIs, and two runs scored. Gallaudet senior catcher Curtis Christopher-Anderson led the Bison to a 3-2 record this week. He combined to hit a robust .684 (13-for-19) with 10 runs, 10 RBIs, and a trio of stolen bases.

Baseball Notes for the Week (April 20): Mary Washington won its 25th game of the year for the third straight year and eighth time overall in Saturday’s CAC tournament win over York. Senior lefty Stefan Schoen pitched a nine-inning complete game, four-hit shutout in the semifinal win. Salisbury completed a four-game run through the lower half of the championship bracket to earn the CAC championship on Sunday. Following wins on Saturday over St. Mary’s and York, the Sea Gulls swept tournament unbeaten Mary Washington to win the double elimination tournament. Salisbury claimed its fifth overall CAC baseball title and fourth in the last five years. Senior outfielder Mac Mollet delivered a key blow in Sunday’s second and deciding game with a three-run homer in the seventh. After losing to York in the second round, the Sea Gulls outlasted St. Mary’s on Saturday when David Sutton doubled and Mike Williams tripled. Rob Kassekert went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Brian Shipe recorded the win with 4.2 innings of work. In the win over York, Williams went 3-for-4 while Nick Pegelow was 2-for-3 and Mollet added a pair of knocks. York has now won 20 games in a season for the fourth consecutive year and the 20th time in the program’s 35-year history. Freshman righthander Chris Brower threw his first career shutout in the 3-0 first round win over Catholic. Brower scattered four hits while he struck out three and walked three others. Two of the Cardinals hits were bunt singles as Brower improved to 4-0 for the season. Catholic suffered two losses in the CAC tournament and was eliminated last week. Sophomore Joe Benedetti was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the 4-3 loss to MWC. St. Mary’s evened their season record this week by going 3-1. The doubleheader sweep for the Seahawks at Randolph-Macon is the third doubleheader sweep of the season, with two of the sweeps coming on the road. Sophomore Ray Simmons earned the win against Gallaudet and is now 5-2 overall for the season. Simmons is tied for the team lead in wins with junior Matt Bailey who earned the victory against Randolph-Macon in game one of the twinbill. Gallaudet senior Brett Talley went 4-for-11 (.363) with five RBIs this week. Tally smacked a grand slam in a 12-11 loss at Lincoln University.

Baseball Notes for the Week (April 13): Mary Washington won two of three games this week to earn the top seed in the CAC tournament for the first time since 2001. The Eagles defeated St. Mary’s before splitting with Catholic. Mary Washington’s dramatic 6-5 come-from-behind win in the bottom of the ninth over Catholic clinched the top seed for the Eagles. Senior Marc Logan drove in the tying and winning runs with RBI singles in the seventh and ninth innings. Salisbury entered the week’s play ranked #26 in the nation and finished the week with a number two seed in the CAC tournament. The Sea Gulls are tied with York College for second but the Sea Gulls earned the second seed by virtue of their split with top-seeded Mary Washington. The Sea Gulls began the week with a 13-3 win over Wesley and then followed with a loss at home against York on Wednesday and a win at York on Saturday. In the win over Wesley, Galen Morres had the hot bat finishing 4-for-5 with three doubles, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Nick Pegelow was 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Brian Shipe scattered three hits over 5.2 innings for the win. In the loss to York, Andrew Jensen and Rob Kassekert both went 3-for-4 while Pegelow was 3-for-5. Nick Dunk was the losing pitcher, working 8.1 innings, surrendering six earned runs on 10 hits. The Gulls built a 6-1 lead after six innings on Saturday to get the win at YCP. Greg Lemon finished 2-for-5 while Jensen added a double. Greg Lasinski went the distance on the mount to get the win. He gave up three runs (one earned) on 11 hits with five strikeouts. York’s Mike Welch had another fantastic week for the green and white as the Spartans went 5-1. Welch hit .565 (13-23) with 11 runs scored, six RBIs, three doubles, one homer, an on-base percentage of .643 and a slugging percentage of .826. Junior Jeff Moore hit .435 (10-23) with 10 RBIs, two doubles, one homer and nine runs scored. St. Mary’s went 2-1 this past week, all in conference action and are now the fifth seed in the upcoming CAC tournament. The Seahawks will travel to second seeded Salisbury on Tuesday for their opening round match-up.

Baseball Notes for the Week (April 6): Mary Washington is ranked #28 in the nation in the first ABCA poll of the season. The Eagles swept three CAC games last week to move into first place in the conference as they topped Salisbury on Monday and York on Wednesday and Saturday. Senior Robbie Wright went 6-for-11 (.545) with seven RBI and two runs scored in three games. Salisbury, ranked 26th in the nation this week, rebounded from an early week setback to Mary Washington to defeat Gallaudet twice as they are now 6-2 in the CAC. In the loss to MWC, Alex Vitale went 1-for-1 with a triple and a run scored. Greg Lemon and Brandon Mason each had a double in the loss. In the win over Gallaudet on Wednesday, Mac Mollet went the distance and got the win on the mound. He struck out 11 and walked only two as he hurled a three-hitter. Nick Pegelow went 4-for-4 with a home run, two runs and two RBIs in the win. Trey Cobb went 3-for-4 with four runs and two RBIs while Rob Kassekert was also 3-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and four RBIs. In Saturday’s win over Gallaudet, Kassekert went 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored. Lemon added two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. York College saw their losing streak reach a season-high three as they fell to Montclair on Tuesday before dropping a pair to Mary Washington on Wednesday and Saturday. Sophomore Mike Welch extended his hitting streak to 22 games (dating back to last season) as he had one hit against Montclair and two hits in each contest against MWC. St. Mary’s lost both games in extra innings for the week, falling to Catholic 7-6 in 12 innings and 3-2 in 10 innings. The Seahawks are now 5-10 in their last 15 contests after beginning the season 6-4-1.

Baseball Notes for the Week (March 30): York’s Mike Welch had a great week as the sophomore hit.556 (10-18) with 12 RBIs, seven runs scored, one double and two homers as the Spartans went 3-1 for the week. The Spartans hit .366 for the week as a team as they averaged 10.5 runs in the four games last week. Catcher P.J. Valenza hit .462 (6-13) for the week while shortstop Justin Heller hit .446 with 10 RBIs and eight runs scored. Freshman Chris Brower had his best collegiate outing on Tuesday as he threw seven shutout innings in the win over Susquehanna. Brower allowed four singles and struck out 12 in the game while he did not walk a batter. Salisbury finished their Florida trip with three straight wins and then won two CAC games over the weekend for a perfect 5-0 week. Salisbury outfielder Jason Lively recorded a perfect 5-for-5 game at the plate and junior hurler Greg Lasinski came out of the bullpen in the tenth to improve his record to 6-0 as Salisbury defeated #23 Mary Washington 4-3 in 10 innings on Saturday. On Sunday, Sea Gull junior Brandon Mason went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI, leading a 14-hit assault as the Gulls topped Catholic, 12-6. Ten different players recorded hits in the game for Salisbury. Junior Brian Shipe worked six innings to get the win as he improves to 2-1. Mary Washington split four games this week, winning two by lopsided margins and falling twice by one run. Freshman centerfielder Eric Fitzgerald went 4-for-5 with a grand slam in MWC’s 12-3 win at Bridgewater on Monday. Fitzgerald, Brandon Cole, and Ray Moore all had two hits at Salisbury on Sunday. St. Mary’s went 2-3 this past week, finishing the week strong with two lopsided wins at Lincoln on Sunday. Senior second baseman Tracy Vallandingham set a new school record for career doubles in the 4-3 loss to Villa Julie. The Seahawks have just four home games remaining this season as they played 11 of their first 12 contests at home this season before their annual spring break trip. Catholic junior Joe Verga went 5-for-8 with two doubles and six RBIs in three games this week. He is now tied for second on the squad with 20 RBIs for the season. In Saturday’s 13-0 win over Gallaudet, Joe Sobocinski picked up his first win since 2002 as he missed all of last year with an injury. The junior went four innings, allowing just one hit as he fanned three.

Baseball Notes for the Week (March 23): Mary Washington split a doubleheader with St. John Fisher on Saturday, winning the first and dropping the second by identical 4-3 scores. Junior designated hitter Lee Rubin had five hits in seven at-bats during the twinbill. York College had an interesting weekend as they fell to #8 Cortland State 15-4 before bouncing back and hammering St. John Fisher 24-11 on Sunday. For the week, junior Jeff Moore hit .600 (6-10) with five RBIs and three runs scored. Sophomore Justin Heller was 5-for-10 with two doubles, a home run, three runs scored and five RBIs. Sophomore Zac Clark picked up his first win of the year against St. John Fisher as he three seven innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on seven hits with seven strikeouts. Salisbury began the week with a pair of victories and the Sea Gulls began their Florida trip having won five straight and 10 of its last 11 games. Salisbury downed Catholic 7-4 and Washington 12-1 to begin their week as they are now 13-3. Alex Vitale had a hot bat in the two games, going 4-for-6 with three runs, three doubles, and a pair of RBIs. Nick Pegelow went 3-for-7 while Greg Lemon was 2-for-6 with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBI. Rob Kassekert also homered and drove in five runs in the two games. Greg Lasinski pitched 8.2 innings, scattering nine hits and three earned runs en route to the win over CUA. Mac Mollet went six innings and did not allow a run while giving up two hits with nine strikeouts in the win over Washington. St. Mary’s dropped four of their last five games in Florida, but they salvaged a 12-11 victory in the final contest of the trip against Albertus Magnus to finish 3-4 on their annual spring break trip. Senior second baseman Tracy Vallandingham broke the school single-season record for doubles during the trip. Catholic senior Bernie Dennis went 7-for-15 in five games this week with four doubles and four walks. He also notched his first save of the year in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader with RIT. Also in that first game, senior Dan Conway threw six shutout innings while striking out six and walking four for his first victory of the season. In the rubber game against RIT on Sunday, sophomore Joe Benedetti cranked out a career-high four hits on two doubles and a home run. He also had four RBIs for the game.

Baseball Notes for the Week (March 16): Mary Washington, ranked #23 in the nation, won four of five games this week to improve to 15-3 overall. Freshman shortstop Ray Moore led the MWC offense by going 11-for-18 (.611) including a four-hit game and a five-hit game which tied the MWC school record. He also had three doubles at Randolph-Macon which also ties an MWC school record. Mary Washington’s starting eight players are hitting a combined .404 for the season. York saw their seven game win streak come to an end on Sunday as YCP dropped a 9-6 decision to Elizabethtown. The Spartans won their first two games of the week as they defeated Catholic in Washington 9-5 and the Cardinals 12-9 in York. Sophomore Mike Welch had a great week as he hit .571 (8-14) with 11 RBIs, five runs scored, three homers, two doubles and a slugging percentage of 1.357. Fellow sophomore Andy Puglisi also had an outstanding week at the plate as he also hit .571 (8-14) with four runs scored, three RBIs, one double and one homer as the Spartans went 2-1 for the week. Salisbury dropped their first game of the week, falling to St. Mary’s 7-4, but bounced back to win their remaining three games during the week. The Sea Gulls defeated St. Mary’s 7-2 and then swept Stevens Tech in a weekend series, 10-4 and 14-5. In the loss to St. Mary’s, Nick Pegelow was 4-for-5 at the plate while Matt Johnson was 2-for-4 with a run scored. In the second game of the series, Greg Lasinski tossed a five hitter as he improves to 3-0. Andrew Jensen and Jason Lively were both 2-for-3 in the winning effort. Against Stevens Tech, Nick Dunk earned his third win of the season as he work seven innings, allowing one earned run with six strikeouts. Pegelow and Greg Lemon were each 2-for-3. In the Sunday game against Stevens Tech, Brian Shipe earned his first win of the year with seven innings of shutout ball. He scattered five hits as he also struck out eight. Rob Kassekert and Lively each went 2-for-3 while Lemon was 3-for-4. St. Mary’s went 3-1 this past week including including a split with Salisbury. The Seahawks are off to their best start in over four years with their 8-5-1 mark. Junior Matt Bailey earned two victories during the week, winning at Salisbury on Tuesday and against Roger Williams on Sunday. Senior Kenny Williams threw a complete game 7-0 shutout against Albertus Magnus. It is the first complete game shutout of the year for the Seahawks. Catholic went 2-2 for the week. Junior John Schmidt pitched a four-hit complete game against Gettysburg as he struck out three and walked none. For the week, Schmidt was 8-for-16 at the plate with three RBIs and three runs scored. Saturday’s game at York saw Kevin Conley go 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, and four RBIs. The sophomore leads the team in hitting (.431), slugging percentage (.569), and RBIs (17).

Baseball Notes for the Week (March 8): Mary Washington won its first eight games en route to an 11-2 record and the #23 preseason ranking by the ABCA. Senior lefty Stefan Schoen is already 4-0 for the season while freshman centerfielder Eric Fitzgerald leads MWC with a .511 batting average through 13 games. Salisbury ran its winning streak to five and defeated the number one team in the nation twice in as many days as the Gulls won the Tri-State Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Salisbury began the week with a 9-1 loss at College of New Jersey but then ran off wins over Chowan (1-0), Wesley (12-2), #1 Eastern Connecticut twice (4-3 and 18-10) and ended the week with a win over Montclair State (8-4). In the win over Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, Eric Bush got the win on the mound and Nick Pegelow was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI. In the second win over ECSU, Rob Kassekert was 4-for-5 with a double and two runs scored to lead Salisbury. Outfielder Jason Lively was 4-for-5 with a double, a pair of runs scored to help lead the Salisbury offense. York College returned from their annual southern trip with a mark of 7-2. The Spartans split their four games at the Emory University Rawlings Classic and then went 5-0 at the Clearwater Invitational in Clearwater, FL. Sophomore Andy Puglisi had a great week in Florida as he hit .500 (12-24) with 10 RBIs, two doubles and one home run. That home run tied the game against Wartburg forcing the game to the 12th inning where the green and white won the game on a Brendan Gilroy single. St. Mary’s went 1-2-1 this past week, all non-conference games at home. The tie against Hampden-Sydney ended SMC’s four-game winning streak. The Seahawks have six regular starters hitting .308 or higher so far this season with the team sporting a batting average of .310 through 10 games this season. St. Mary’s faces Salisbury twice this upcoming week before leaving for their annual spring break trip to Florida.
