Field Hockey Notes for the Week:
Salisbury moved up to number two in the latest NFHCA national poll,
behind only undefeated Middlebury. Mary Washington moved to seventh
in the nation last week and equalled last season’s win total
of 15 with a 4-2 win over Randolph-Macon in the regular season finale.
St. Mary’s won their first round tournament match with Goucher
2-0. It was the first time in school history that the team hosted
a post-season contest. With the win, the Seahawks reached a double
digit win total for the first time in school history as well as
securing the first-ever winning season in the program’s ten
year history. Catholic won its sixth straight on Sunday as senior
Stephanie Roselle scored twice in the second half including
the game-winner with less than four minutes left in the game, lifting
the Cardinals to a 3-2 win over YCP. For Roselle, the goal was her
fifth game-winning goal of the season and she extended her point
streak to 11 straight games. Junior goalie Erin Swift
posted seven saves in the win. York College ended their season with
a 3-2 loss to Catholic in the CAC quarterfinals. All four of the
Spartans’ losses to CAC opponents were all by one goal including
an overtime loss to St. Mary’s. Goucher never trailed third-seeded
St. Mary’s by more than one goal in the opening round of the
CAC tournament until the final 21 seconds of the contest. During
the course of the game, goalie Melissa Leyland
passed Moria Rooney (1991-92) for third place in career saves at
Goucher with 436.
Field Hockey Notes for the Week:
Salisbury freshman Tracey Lord scored the game’s
lone goal as the Sea Gulls downed #8 Mary Washington 1-0. Senior
Melissa Taylor recorded her 11th shutout of the
season in goal for SU as she notched six saves. Earlier in the week,
Lloyd notched a hat-trick in the 4-0 win over Randolph-Macon while
Melissa Webster added one goal. Salisbury is averaging
4.1 goals per game while they are allowing just 0.60 goals per game.
Brittany Elliot has a team-high 37 points including
12 goals and 13 assists. Mary Washington, the eighth ranked team
in the nation, saw its 12-game winning streak snapped in a 1-0 loss
to number three Salisbury on Saturday. Senior Chrissy Soper
also saw her five-game scoring streak get snapped. St. Mary’s
went 1-1 this past week. With one more win this season, St. Mary’s
will reach double figures in wins for the first time in school history
as well as secure the first-ever winning record in program history.
The first round tournament match with Goucher is the first time
in school history that the team will host a post-season tournament
contest. Catholic extended their win streak to a season-high five
games with its two shutout wins this week. Stephanie Roselle
added three goals and two assists in two games this week as the
senior now has scored a point in 10 straight games. Sophomore Melissa
Schneider scored twice and had two assists in the 5-0 win
over Goucher. York College’s Rachel Alderfer
tallied the game-winning goal in the double-overtime victory over
Seton Hill. It was Alderfer’s fourth game-winning goal of
the year. The freshman leads YCP with 27 points on 13 goals and
one assist.
Field Hockey Notes for the Week:
Mary Washington extended its win streak to eleven games as the Eagles
topped Bridgewater and Christopher Newport this week. Senior Chrissy
Soper continued her outstanding play as the defender continues
to lead the Eagles in scoring. She had two goals against Bridgewater
and a goal against CNU. Those goals extended her goal-scoring streak
to four straight games. Salisbury responded to their only loss of
the season with a perfect 3-0 week, outscoring their three opponents
11-1. The Sea Gulls opened the week with a 3-1 defeat of number
four Rowan. Lindsey Elliot, Megan Powell,
and Lynette Sgrignoli each scored in the win. Against
Washington, Erin Budd scored the Sea Gulls first
two goals and then assisted on Brittany Elliot’s
goal as they defeated the Shorewomen 3-0. Melissa Taylor
made seven saves en route to the shutout. Salisbury finished the
week with a 5-0 win over Frostburg. Budd scored a pair of goals
while Brittany Elliot scored a goal and added two
assists. St. Mary’s went 2-1 this past week. The 4-3 win over
Villa Julie set a new team record for wins in a season with seven.
With the win over Goucher, the Seahawks clinched their first-ever
winning record in the CAC and will host a first-round tournament
contest for the first time in school history. York College went
2-1 this week as they defeated Goucher 6-3, lost to Catholic 2-1,
and then beat Villa Julie 4-1 on Sunday. Freshman Rachel
Alderfer continues to be outstanding as she scored six
goals in the three games. Alderfer recorded a hat trick in the win
over Goucher and then scored the lone goal in the loss to CUA. She
capped the week with a pair of tallies in the win over VJC. Alderfer
now has a team-leading 25 points on 12 goals and one assist. Junior
Natalie Mowery added two goals and three assists
for the week. Catholic has won three in a row, evening their record
at 6-6 for the season. Stephanie Roselle had three
goals this week including two tallies against Washington & Lee.
The senior leads the team with 10 goals and five assists. Goucher’s
Melissa Leyland had a busy day in goal against
York as she made 24 saves to become only the fourth goalie in school
history to surpass 400 saves during her career. Jana White
and Sarah Lyons both contributed a pair of goals
to the Gophers’ second victory of the season, a 5-1 win over
Hood.
Field Hockey Notes for the Week:
Mary Washington was ranked ninth in the nation this week by the
NFHCA. The Eagles won their tenth game of the season this week,
marking the 13th time in Dana Hall’s 14 seasons
that the Eagles have won double digit games. Salisbury, the number
one team in the nation, fell for the first time this season as the
third-ranked College of New Jersey Lions downed the Sea Gulls 4-1
on Saturday. The loss snapped Salisbury’s nine-game winning
streak. Freshman Tracey Lloyd scored the Sea Gulls’
lone goal with 15:09 left in the first half. The Lions went on to
score four unanswered goals. Earlier in the week, Salisbury rallied
from a 3-2 halftime deficit at Catholic to post a 6-3 win on Wednesday.
Lindsay Elliott led the Sea Gulls with three goals
and two assists. Her two assists were the 27th and 28th of her career,
breaking the Salisbury assists record which was held by her mother,
Susan Ralph Elliott (1977-80). St. Mary’s split their two
matches this past week and made some history in the process. The
4-3 win against the College of Notre Dame tied the team record for
wins in a season (6). The Seahawks have five regular season contests
remaining as well as the CAC tournament to eclipse the record. York
College won all three of their matches this week as freshman
Rachel Alderfer had a great week. Alderfer had four goals
and one assist for the week with one of those being a game-winning
goal. Junior Brooke Wilson was also outstanding
as she had eight points on four assists and two goals. Wilson now
leads the Spartans with 16 points on four goals and eight assists.
Alderfer has 13 points on six goals and one assist while junior
Becky McCall has six goals for 12 points. Goucher’s
15-game losing streak came to an end on Thursday when the Gophers
erupted for four second-half goals to earn the 4-0 win over Wilson.
Sarah Lyons tallied two of the Gophers’ four
goals. The Gophers also owned a 1-0 halftime lead against Richard
Stockton but were denied back-to-back wins for the first time since
October 2000 when the Ospreys tallied a pair of second half goals
for the 2-1 win. Catholic gave top-ranked Salisbury a scare on Wednesday
as they led 3-2 at the half before falling 6-3. The Cardinals then
had to play #7 Eastern Mennonite on Saturday and as the Royals posted
a 7-1 win. Senior Stephanie Roselle increased her
point streak to seven games as she netted the game-winning goal,
her third of the season, in the first overtime to help CUA defeat
Frostburg 2-1 on Sunday.
Field Hockey Notes for the Week:
Mary Washington extended its win streak to seven with a pair of
wins this week. The Eagles are ranked ninth in the nation. Senior
Lindsey Startt scored a pair of goals and assisted
in the other in MWC’s 3-1 win over Lynchburg on Saturday.
Salisbury is ranked number one in the nation and the Sea Gulls did
nothing to hurt their ranking after they defeated number three Messiah
3-0 in Salisbury on Saturday. Junior Jess Dixon
tallied her fourth and fifth goals of the season, both on assists
from senior Lindsey Elliot. Junior Erin
Budd tallied one goal on an assist from Brittany
Elliot, her team leading eighth of the season.The undefeated
Sea Gulls look to keep their momentum rolling as they travel to
Catholic on Wednesday and at number five College of New Jersey on
Saturday. The Sea Gulls face the second-ranked Rowan Profs next
week. St. Mary’s won both of their matches this past week
and made some history in the progress. The win against York in overtime
was their first-ever victory over the Spartans in the ten-year history
of the Seahawk program. Junior goalkeeper Whitney Fahrman
made 26 saves for the Seahawks during the two games this past week
as she posted 13 stops in each contest. She earned the shutout against
Randolph-Macon on Wednesday. Catholic’s Jamie Punyko
scored twice, including the game-winner, with less than five minutes
to go in regulation to help Catholic defeat Villa Julie. Senior
Stephanie Roselle notched her team-leading fourth
goal of the season in the 4-2 loss to Roanoke.
Field Hockey Notes for the Week:
Mary Washington was ranked ninth in the nation this week by the
NFHCA. The Eagles have won five straight and have six players with
at least 10 points. Salisbury freshman Megan Powell
tallied the game’s only goal with 1:50 remaining in the second
half to lift the Sea Gulls to a 1-0 non-conference win at #13 McDaniel
on Wednesday. Powell’s goal, her second of the season, was
assisted by Kim McLeod. Salisbury’s Melissa
Taylor recorded two saves while registering her fifth shutout
in six games this season. Salisbury outshot McDaniel 16-7 for the
game. York College received a goal from Becky McCall
with no time remaining on a penalty corner as the Spartans beat
Dickinson 1-0 in their only game of the week. The shutout was goalie
Meg Eckenrode’s second of the season. St.
Mary’s lost their only match of the week, 1-0 to Frostburg
State on Sunday. It was their third consecutive loss after starting
the season 3-2. It was the fourth time this season that the Seahawks
have been shutout. The Seahawks still need three more wins to tie
the team record for wins in a season (6). Goucher goalie Melissa
Leyland was credited with 14 saves in Goucher’s 5-1
loss to Philadelphia Biblical, boosting her career total to 358,
which ties her with Heather Koch for fourth place in career saves
among all-time Gopher goalies. Catholic University came close to
upsetting number nine Mary Washington as they took the Eagles to
double-overtime before falling to MWC 2-1. The Cardinals rebounded
with a 4-0 shutout of Christopher Newport on Sunday. Senior Stephanie
Roselle scored twice and helped set up two others as Catholic
had its first shutout of the season. Junior goalie Erin
Swift made 12 saves for CUA.
Field Hockey Notes for the Week:
Mary Washington is ranked 11th in the nation this week. The Eagles
downed St. Mary’s 4-0 in CAC play before topping #19 Franklin
& Marshall 5-2 on Sunday. Salisbury sisters Lindsey
and Brittany Elliott combined for six goals and
one assist Wednesday afternoon as the No. 3-ranked Salisbury University
field hockey team knocked off Johns Hopkins University, 8-1. Brittany
Elliott leads the team with eight goals and five assists, for a
team-high 21 points. Lindsey Elliott is second with five goals.
She also has one assist. Erin Budd has three goals
and five assists while Melissa Webster has added
five assists.York played their first game in 12 days with their
2-1 win over Alvernia on Sunday. The Spartans received goals from
Emily Schneck and Christiana Scarlata
in the win. St. Mary’s lost to #11 Mary Washington by a 4-0
score last week. The Eagles outshot the Seahawks 16-7 in the contest.
The Seahawks are now idle until Sunday, October 28, when they travel
to Frostburg State for a 3:00 pm non-conference contest. Catholic
had its two weekend games postponed due to inclement weather. Senior
Stephanie Roselle netted the only CUA tally in
the game with Gettysburg. It was her second goal of the season.
Goucher’s Melissa Leyland made a career-high
31 saves and stopped a pair of penalty strokes in Goucher’s
3-0 loss to Dickinson.
Field Hockey Notes for the Week:
Salisbury is ranked fifth in the latest NFHCA poll. The Sea Gulls
lived up to their rankings by rolling to the championship of their
own tournament with three shutout wins for the weekend. Salisbury
blanked Denison 4-0 and Wesley 6-0 on Saturday and followed that
with a 4-0 championship win over Christopher Newport on Sunday.
Four different players scored in the win over Denison as the Sea
Gulls outshot Denison 29-1. Senior Kristi Kruger
and sophomore Brittany Elliott sparked the win
over Wesley in game two by scoring two goals each. Junior forward
Jess Dixon keyed Salisbury’s final victory over CNU
by scoring twice. The Sea Gulls are now 4-0 and have not yet allowed
a goal in 2003.Mary Washington is ranked ninth in the country. The
Eagles downed Goucher 6-0 on Wednesday as six different players
scored goals. York dropped their only match this week as they fell
to Wesley on Tuesday. Saturday’s CAC opener against Mary Washington
was rained out. St. Mary’s defeated a nationally ranked opponent
for the first time in the program’s ten year history with
the 1-0 win over Catholic. It was the second consecutive victory
over the Cardinals dating back to last season’s conference
tournament. The Seahawks are already half way to the school record
for wins in a season (six) with three wins through six contests.
The 15th ranked Catholic Cardinals suffered their first loss of
the season at St. Mary's on Wednesday. Junior goalie Erin
Swift made four saves in the game. Goucher’s Bridie
Crook established a new single-season school record by making four
defensive saves in the Gophers’ loss to MWC. The former mark
of three defensive saves in a game was set in 1991 by Renie Amoss.
Field Hockey Notes for the Week:
The Salisbury Sea Gulls opened their season Sunday with a 4-0 win
over St. Mary’s. Sophomore Brittany Elliot
scored two goals and had one assist to lead the Gulls. Junior Erin
Budd and senior Lindsey Elliot also scored
goals for Salisbury while Melissa Webster had two assists. Catholic’s
Christy Engstrom had a goal and an assist in the
Cardinals’ season opening 4-1 win at Lynchburg. It was the
third straight season-opening win for CUA. Junior goalie Erin
Swift posted nine saves in the win. Seniors Stephanie
Roselle and Sondra Pires returned to the
Cardinal lineup after missing 2002 due to injury. York went 1-1
for the week as the fell to Ursinus before shutting out Frostburg
on Sunday. The shutout was the Spartans first of the season as goalie
Meg Eckenrode made five saves for the game. Becky
McCall scored her second goal of the season in the win
over Frostburg while Spartan senior Sara Mauck
tallied her first collegiate goal on a penalty stroke in the first
half against FSU. Goucher’s Jen Madera was
credited with three of the six defensive saves Goucher players made
during the first three games of the season. After opening the season
with two wins, St. Mary’s fell to 2-2 after losing to the
defending national champions, Rowan University, 7-0 on Saturday,
and to 2002 Final Four participant, Salisbury, 4-0 on Sunday.
