Notes:
Men’s Basketball Notes for the Week
(2/23/04): Mary Washington wrapped up the top seed in the
CAC tournament with a pair of wins this week as they defeated Goucher
on Wednesday and Salisbury in overtime on Saturday. Against Goucher,
point guard Evan Fowler recorded his 625th career
assist, breaking the CAC record of York’s Jason Saurbaugh.
Sophomore Ian Sumers scored a career-high 31 points in the win over
the Gophers. On Saturday, Fowler had 12 points, nine rebounds, and
seven assists while fellow senior Erik Rodriguez
erupted for 20 points as the Eagles downed the Gulls in OT. Mary
Washington will be the top seed in the CAC tournament for the first
time ever. Catholic earned its seventh straight first-place finish
in the regular season as the Cardinals tied with Mary Washington
for first in the league with 12-2 marks. With its 20 wins this season,
the Cardinals have won 20 or more games for the seventh straight
year and the eighth overall. On Wednesday at York, Patrick
Satalin netted a career-high of 25 points as the Cardinals
downed the Spartans 91-80. The guard was 9-of-17 from the floor
including five threes. The Cardinals extended their win streak to
10 on Saturday with a 72-62 win over Goucher on Senior Day. William
Morley and Blair Mills each scored 19
points in the victory while Adam Dickman added
six points and a game-high five assists. Marymount is on a four-game
win streak going into the CAC tournament. Carlton Phelps,
with 32 points this week in two games, moved into 5th place among
MU’s all-time leading scorers with 1,178 career points. The
Saints have had at least three players per contest in double figures
over their four game win streak. St. Mary’s won both of their
contests this week and will be the fourth seed in the upcoming CAC
tournament. It will be the first time since the 2000-01 season that
the Seahawks will host a CAC tournament game. Junior guard Matt
Miller drained a three-pointer from the top of the arc
with six second left to break a 67-67 tie with York as St. Mary’s
earned the win and the fourth seed. York has lost three straight
and six of their last eight heading into the CAC tournament. Sophomore
Brandon Bushey led the Spartans against St. Mary’s
with 18 points and five rebounds. Goucher faces third-seeded Marymount
in the opening round of the CAC championship tournament. Earlier
in the season, Goucher pulled out a 70-53 win at the Verizon Sports
Arena as the Gophers scored 17 unanswered points during a crucial
eight minute stretch of the second half. It is the first time the
two teams have met in a CAC playoff game since they squared off
in the 1999-2000 championship game. Salisbury finished the regular
season with a 1-2 week as they defeated Villa Julie before falling
to Marymount and Mary Washington in overtime on Saturday. Against
Villa Julie, Segun Odumeru led the Gulls with 24
points while Sean Whittaker added 23 points and
Ray Williams contributed 21 points. Williams also
had a team-high six rebounds for the Gulls. Against Marymount, Whittaker
and Justin Rice each tallied 12 points while Evan
Wowk contributed eight points. In the overtime loss to
MWC, Salisbury was outscored 13-4 in the overtime period. Neal
Tucker paced Salisbury with a career-high 29 points including
a school-record tying nine three-point field goals. Tucker converted
10-of-15 from the floor including 9-of-13 from three. Williams added
20 points while Kyle Harmon had 10 points and a
team-high nine rebounds
Men’s Basketball Notes for the Week
(2/16/04): Catholic moved into a tie atop the CAC standings
by virtue of Wednesday’s win over Mary Washington. William
Morley poured in a game-high 21 points and sophomore Matt
Tanner added 12. Morley then helped the Cardinals to their
eighth straight win in Saturday’s victory over St. Mary’s.
The senior forward tallied a team-high 19 points. Shane
Sowden collected his first career double-double, scoring
12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. The sophomore added two blocks,
two steals and an assist. Mary Washington saw its seven-game win
streak come to a close with a loss at Catholic on Wednesday but
rebounded with a home win against Gallaudet on Saturday. Junior
Jon Hurd led the Eagles with 19 points at CUA while
he added 13 points in the win over the Bison. He also grabbed six
boards in each game. York’s Brandon Bushey
tied his career-high with 29 points in the loss on Saturday at Marymount.
Bushey was 10-for-14 from the field including 6-for-8 from beyond
the arc. Bushey averaged 20.5 points per game for the two Spartan
games this week. Freshman Brad Zerfing averaged
10 points, 5.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game for
the week. Goucher presented head coach Leonard Trevino
with the 200th win of his coaching career, all at Goucher, when
the Gophers defeated Salisbury 73-70 on Saturday. Garrett
Smith was the leading scorer and rebounder in the victory
as he supplied the Gophers with 23 points and 14 points. Marymount
evened their CAC record to 6-6 with two wins this week. MU came
from 16 points down in the second half to defeat York in overtime
on Saturday. Kip McCoy had a season-high 31 points
including 22 in the second half and overtime. He was 9-for-9 from
the free throw line and 11-for-16 from the floor. Marymount had
its second game in a row shooting over 60 percent from the floor
in the second half. St. Mary’s lost all three of their contests
this past week and have now lost four in a row after having a three-game
win streak. Sophomore forward Joe Farina leads
the team in scoring for the season as he is averaging 15.9 points
per game. Salisbury was 1-1 for the week as they defeated Gallaudet
before falling to Goucher 73-70 on Saturday. The loss to Goucher
was their sixth loss of the season by four points or less. Against
Gallaudet, four Sea Gulls scored in double figures led by Sean
Whittaker hit for 20 points while Ray Williams
chipped in with 17 points. Segun Odumeru added
14 points and six rebounds while Dameon Gibbs tallied
12 points while pulling down five boards. Against Goucher, Williams
led the Sea Gulls with 23 points while Odumeru was the only other
Gull in double figures with 10 points.
Men’s Basketball Notes for the Week
(2/9/04): Mary Washington won three games this week to
extend their win streak to seven. Senior point guard Evan
Fowler averaged 10 points, eight assists, and 3.3 steals
per game in the week’s wins. Junior Jon Hurd
added 18 points per game for the three contests. The Eagles were
ranked fifth in the first NCAA Mid-Atlantic regional poll and currently
have a 12-2 regional record. Catholic won their sixth straight Saturday
with a 74-60 win at Marymount. Senior Blair Mills
registered 18 points and nine boards. On Wednesday, the Cardinals
tied a season-high with nine three-pointers in the 78-57 win over
Salisbury. Sophomore Patrick Satalin netted 12
points in the win, Catholic’s seventh in a row over the Sea
Gulls. York split their two games this week as they defeated Gallaudet
before dropping a two-point heartbreaker to Salisbury at home. Sophomore
Brandon Bushey averaged a team-best 17.0 points,
4.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in the Spartans’ two games this
week. Senior Steve Schmehl was the only other Spartan to average
double figures for the week as he scored 20 points in two games
for the week. Goucher’s Garrett Smith and
Jonathan Garritt combined for 42 points in Goucher’s
68-54 win over Gallaudet. Smith did most of his damage in the first
half, scoring 17 of his team-high 24 points in the opening 20 minutes
of play. Garritt tallied all 18 of his points in the second half.
St. Mary’s split their two contest this past week. Sophomore
forward Joe Farina scored 22 points in the win
over Goucher and was the lone Seahawk in double figures in the loss
at Mary Washington with 12 points. The Seahawks have surpassed last
season’s win total and have won more than six games in a season
for the first time since the 2000-2001 season. Marymount set a school
record in free throws as the Saints were a perfect 12-for-12 against
Catholic. Six different players were 2-for-2 from the line in the
game. Salisbury split their two games for the week as they fell
to Catholic on Wednesday before bouncing back and edging York on
Saturday. Against Catholic, the Sea Gulls hit 45.7% of their shots
from the floor but committed 21 turnovers in the loss. Ray
Williams and Segun Odumeru each scored
12 points while Neal Tucker added 11 for Salisbury.
Against York, Salisbury hit 46.9% of their field goal attempts while
the Spartans shot a chilly 39.4% from the floor. Sean Whittaker
recorded a game-high 16 points while Tucker added 13 points and
five boards. Williams added 10 including the game-winning lay-up
with just two seconds left.
Men’s Basketball Notes for the Week
(2/3/04): Mary Washington swept a pair of road games this
week to maintain first place in the CAC with a 7-1 league mark.
Freshman Mike Lee scored 25 points and Erik
Rodriguez added 23 as MWC won at Goucher on Wednesday night.
Sophomore Ian Sumers led MWC with 22 points in a 74-68 win at York
on Saturday. Kevin Moore added 14 points in the
win over the Spartans. Catholic extended their win streak to four
games with wins over York and Gallaudet this week. Senior William
Morley surpassed the 1,500 career point mark against Gallaudet.
He becomes the 10th player in school history to reach that plateau.
He led all scorers with 19 points and hauled in 10 rebounds for
his third double-double of the season. Sophomore Matt Tanner
chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds in the win
over the Bison. Against York, sophomore Patrick Satalin
netted a career-high 20 points including four three-point field
goals. As a team, the Cardinals shot a season-best 57% (35-of-61)
from the floor in the win. York dropped their two games for the
week as their five-game winning streak was snapped on Wednesday
at Catholic. For the week, sophomore Brandon Bushey
averaged 14.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.0 steals
per game while fellow sophomore Kenny Fass also
averaged 14.5 points per game in addition to pulling in 3.0 rebounds
per game. Fass shot 76.8% (11-14) from the floor including 3-for-3
from beyond the arc. The Spartans struggled on the boards this week
as they were outrebounded 69-50 in the two contests combined. Goucher’s
Jonathan Garritt tallied a career-high 24 points
in the Gophers’ loss to Mary Washington. The sophomore guard
also knocked down a game-high 16 points in the 70-53 win over Marymount.
St. Mary’s won both of their contests this past week. The
Seahawks came back from being down 12 points at the half to Gallaudet
to earn the win on Wednesday. The Seahawks have already matched
last year’s win total of six with seven games remaining in
the 2003-04 season. Freshman point guard Dan Engelstad
averaged 14 points, 4.5 assists, and 4.0 steals in two games this
past week. Salisbury finally got over the hump and picked up their
first CAC win of the season after six straight defeats when SU knocked
off Marymount 75-68 on Wednesday. The Sea Gulls couldn’t keep
the momentum going as they fell to St. Mary’s 69-59 on Saturday.
Against Marymount, freshman Segun Odumeru scored
a career-high 25 points to help Salisbury to the come-from-behind
victory over MU. Sophomore Justin Rice added 14
points for Salisbury while Kyle Harmon finished
with 11 points. Ray Williams scored seven points
and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Against St. Mary’s,
Rice led Salisbury with 17 points while Williams added 14. Freshman
Sean Whittaker added 11 points off the bench for Salisbury.
Men’s Basketball Notes for the Week
(1/27/04): Mary Washington remained tied for first place
in the CAC with a pair of wins this week and have now won five of
their last six. Freshman Mike Lee continued to
impress with a team-high 19 points in the win over Gallaudet. He
then established a new career-high with 28 points in an 86-68 win
over Salisbury. Lee, who scored seven points in his first minute
of play on Saturday, shot 7-for-10 from the floor including 5-for-7
from three and was 9-for-11 from the charity stripe. For the season,
Lee is 36-for-39 from the line (92.3%). York won both of their games
this week to improve to 7-1 in the month of January after a 1-7
mark in November and December. Sophomore Brandon Bushey
had an outstanding week as he averaged 23.5 points in the two games
for the week. Bushey shot 50% from the floor, 46% (6-13) from three
and 89.5% (17-19) from the charity stripe. Senior Steve
Schmehl moved into eighth place on the YCP scoring list
with 1,280 points, passing former teammate John Ely who was eighth
with 1,274 points. Schmehl averaged 15 points and four rebounds
for the week while junior Ben Seibert averaged
a double-double in the two games as he averaged 13 points and 12
rebounds per game. Seibert pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds
in the victory over St. Mary’s on Saturday. Junior Stephen
Grimes dished out a career-high 14 assists in the win over
Marymount on Wednesday. The 14 assists were one helper away from
tying the single-game school record. Catholic, winners of two straight,
picked up two big CAC road wins this week as they downed St. Mary’s
and Goucher. Senior Blair Mills poured in a team-high
18 points in the win at Goucher. Sophomore Patrick Satalin
chipped in with 10 points and six assists. With 1,463 career points,
William Morley sits alone in 10th place on CUA’s
all-time scoring list. Needing 37 points, Morley can become the
10th player in CUA’s men’s basketball history to surpass
1,500 career points. Marymount rebounded from Wednesday’s
loss to York with a convincing win over Gallaudet as four different
players reached double figures. Marymount shot 61.8% from the floor
for the game. In his first start of the season, Goucher’s
Garrett Smith achieved a double-double of 20 points
and 10 rebounds in the Gophers’ 68-65 come-from-behind victory
over Salisbury. The Gophers trailed by as many as 16 points in the
first half. St. Mary’s lost both of their contests this week
falling to both Catholic and York by nine points each. The loss
to Catholic was the first home loss of the season for the Seahawks.
Sophomore forward Joe Farina leads leads the team
in both scoring (16.0 ppg) and rebounding (5.9 rpg) this season.
Gallaudet might have suffered two losses but it wasn’t due
to the play of sophomore Robert Haney. Haney averaged
27.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.5 blocks per game
for the week. Despite their 7-10 record, the Bison are better than
.500 (5-4) at home and 1-0 in neutral court games. Salisbury had
another tough week as their losing streak stretched to six with
a pair of CAC losses. On Wednesday, the Sea Gulls led most of the
way against Goucher but dropped a 68-65 setback at Goucher. Freshman
Sean Whittaker scored 18 points including four
threes, but the Gophers overcame a 16-point first-half deficit to
win the game. Freshman guard Ray Williams added
16 points while Neal Tucker and Justin
Rice each contributed eight points off the bench. On Saturday,
Whittaker led the Gulls with 16 points and five boards. Segun
Odumeru added 15 points and four boards while Rice and
Williams each recorded 10 points.
Men’s Basketball Notes for the Week
(1/20/04): Mary Washington remained tied for first in the
CAC after splitting a pair of games this week. The Eagles downed
Catholic at home on Wednesday as Jon Hurd tallied a game-high 23
points. Freshman Mike Lee added 21 points. In a
70-57 loss at St. Mary’s on Saturday, Lee scored 14 points
and sophomore Ian Sumers scored a team-high 16
points. The loss to SMC snaps a five-game win streak by MWC over
the Seahawks, and the win over CUA runs the Eagles’ win streak
to two against the Cardinals. York won a pair of games this week
to extend their win streak to a season-high three. The Spartans
are now 5-1 in the month of January after their 1-7 start in November
and December. Senior Steve Schmehl had a great
week as the guard averaged 21 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists,
and 2.0 steals per game in the two Spartan wins this week. Schmehl
shot 85.7% from the free throw line and 50% from the field. Sophomore
Brandon Bushey added 19.5 points per game for the
week while junior Stephen Grimes added 12.5 points,
8.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 2.5 steals per game for the week
including a career-high 19 point performance at Salisbury on Saturday.
Freshman Brad Zerfing also established a new career
high with his 18-point effort at Salisbury. Marymount notched a
pair of big CAC wins this past week including a 73-66 overtime win
at Catholic on Saturday. In that game, Marymount out-rebounded the
Cardinals 52-32 and had four players in double figures. For the
week, junior Kip McCoy averaged 14 points, 10 rebounds,
2.0 steals and a block per game. Catholic, the 25th ranked team
in the nation, dropped a pair of games this week. The first was
a tough 70-65 loss at Mary Washington and a 73-66 overtime loss
at home to Marymount on Saturday. The Cardinals three game losing
streak is their longest such streak since the 1996-97 season. Senior
William Morley netted 11 points and grabbed seven
rebounds against MWC and followed that with a game-high 21 points
against Marymount. Goucher’s Trevor Quinn
was the leading scorer for the Gophers with 18 points in a 65-63
win over Gallaudet, the Gophers’ 20th win in their last 21
games against the Bison. St. Mary’s split their two conference
games this week, falling to Marymount 75-65 and upsetting Mary Washington
70-57. Sophomore Joe Farina scored a season-high
28 points against the Eagles and shot an amazing 59.6% from the
floor for the contest. The Seahawks need just two more victories
in their remaining 11 contests to match last season’s win
total. Gallaudet had a very dramatic week. losing two games by a
combined three points and winning one game by two points. During
all that, the Bison managed to win their seventh game of the year,
two more than they won all of last year. Salisbury lost its third
game by two points or less on Wednesday when the Sea Gulls fell
at Gallaudet. Segun Odumeru hit 7-of-9 from the
field to lead Salisbury with 18 points. Aaron Meekins added 10 points
and four rebounds while Dameon Gibbs tallied nine
points and nine rebounds as Salisbury hit 41.5% of their shots from
the floor. Against York, freshman Sean Whitaker
and guard Ray Williams tallied 20 points each to
lead the Gulls. Gibbs added 12 points and guard Justin Rice
scored 11 points. Salisbury made 11-of-22 from beyond the arc but
missed their final three-point attempt that would have tied the
game with three seconds left. Salisbury surrendered a six point
lead over the final 5:54 of the game as York earned the road win.
Men’s Basketball Notes for the Week
(1/13/04): Catholic had it’s nine-game win streak
snapped in a 79-63 loss at Susquehanna on Thursday. The Cardinals,
ranked 15th in the nation, rebounded by defeating Greensboro in
the first round of the 2004 CUA Pepsi Classic. CUA, who had won
the past four titles of their own tournament, lost to 25th ranked
Kean University 59-56 in the tournament championship game. Senior
William Morley, along with freshman Patrick
Dwyer, was named to the All-Tournament team. Mary Washington
senior Erik Rodriguez continued his hot shooting
as MWC downed Methodist 77-58 on Sunday. Rodriguez shot 6-for-10
on three point attempts, including 5-of-6 in the first half, en
route to a 22-point performance. Goucher’s Isaac Brooks
nailed the game-winning three-point field goal with 1:13 remaining
and achieved his first 20-point performance in a Goucher uniform
in nearly two years by converting a free throw with :16 showing
on the clock as the Gophers scored the final six points of the contest
to pull out an 81-76 triumph over the Apprentice School. The Gophers
tied the single-game school record for free throw percentage by
making 14 of their 15 attempts, good for a 93.3% accuracy mark.
York College finished third at their Fourth Annual Coaches vs. Cancer
Classic. The Spartans fell to Chowan, 84-74, on Friday and bounced
back with an 85-84 win over Montclair in the consolation game. The
Spartans won the game when senior Steve Schmehl
hit a turnaround baseline jumper with eight seconds left to give
the Spartans the one-point win. Sophomore Brandon Bushey
tallied a career-high 27 points while Schmehl added 18 markers of
his own. The Spartans have now won three of their last four games.St.
Mary’s had Wednesday’s home contest against Elizabethtown
postponed due to a heating problem at Somerset Gym. The Seahawks
lost both of their games at the Moravian Greyhound Rock Classic
over the weekend, falling to Grove City, 63-58, and Misericordia,
83-63. Sophomore Joe Farina was named to the All-Tournament
team after averaging 16 points and 4.5 rebounds in the tournament.
Farina also shot 55.6% from the field in the two games. Since returning
to the lineup, Kip McCoy has averaged 16 points
and 7.8 rebounds per contest for the six games he has played. Gallaudet
has won three straight games for the second time this season. Prior
to this campaign, the Bison had not won three straight since 1994.
The Bison have their shot at four straight when they play Villa
Julie on Monday night. The last time Gallaudet won four straight
was February of 1991.Salisbury started the new year off right, coming
from behind to knock off Christopher Newport 59-53 on Wednesday
night. Justin Rice scored 12 points while Ray
Williams and Sean Whittaker each added
10 points. Salisbury then dropped a pair of close games at the Wilkes-Barre
challenge on Friday and Saturday. Salisbury fell to Wilkes, 71-62,
on Friday. Rice led the Gulls with 14 points, seven rebounds, and
four assists. Segun Odumeru added 12 points for
Salisbury. On Saturday, Salisbury dropped a 68-57 decision to Kings.
Rice tallied 11 points and handed out three assists while Whittaker
added 11 markers of his own. Rice was named to the All-Tournament
team for his efforts.
Men’s Basketball Notes for the Week:
Mary Washington finished 1-2 on its Florida trip against Div. I
Florida Atlantic and NAIA powers Embry-Riddle and Flagler. Senior
guard Erik Rodriguez turned in an outstanding week
in the series of games. He had 12 points against Florida Atlantic,
21 at Embry-Riddle, and 22 against Flagler. MWC is 4-1 in Mid-Atlantic
region games. Goucher’s Trevor Quinn and
Pierre Jones represented Goucher on the All-Tournament
team at the Grand Canyon Classic. Quinn tallied 19 points in the
88-78 loss to Montclair and 16 in the 75-59 triumph over Southern
Maine, while Jones turned in a 12-point, four-rebound effort against
Montclair before going 10-for-18 from the field to finish with 20
points against Southern Maine. St. Mary’s won their lone contest
over the holiday break with a 57-54 road victory over McDaniel.
The Seahawks have four non-conference games remaining this season
and three will be played by the end of the week. Sophomore
Joe Farina leads the team in scoring (14.0 ppg) and rebounding
(6.6 rpg) this season. York College won their own White Rose City
Classic, downing Medgar Evers 92-69 and Widener University 67-65
en route to the title. Against Medgar Evers, senior Steve
Schmehl had 19 points and five assists in 26 minutes of
work. Ben Seibert notched the double-double with
13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. The Spartans played all 14
players on their roster with 11 reaching the scoring column in the
win. Against Widener, sophomore Brandon Bushey
poured in a game-high 21 points in addition to grabbing eight rebounds,
collecting three steals and dishing out two assists. Schmehl added
18 points for YCP while Seibert added eight points and seven rebounds.
Men’s Basketball Notes for the Week:
Catholic won its seventh straight game with an 89-79 win over North
Carolina Wesleyan on Sunday. Sophomore Patrick Satalin
scored 13 of this team-high 18 points in the second half to lift
the Cardinals to the win. Satalin was 5-of-10 from the floor including
3-of-8 from beyond the arc and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Sophomore
Shane Sowden made his first career start on Sunday,
registering 10 points, four rebounds, one blocked shot and a steal.
Goucher’s Trevor Quinn achieved his first
two double-doubles of the season last week. In the Gophers’
63-60 loss to DeSales, Quinn had a season-high 19 points while he
also grabbed 11 rebounds. In the come-from-behind win over Susquehanna,
Quinn notched 12 points, 11 rebounds and six assists in the 85-80
win. The Saints lost in the last five seconds of the game against
Neumann despite Corey Diamond’s career-high
28 points. Diamond was 10-for-16 from the floor and 7-of-9 from
beyond the arc. St. Mary’s went 2-1 this past week, earning
their first two wins of the season. In the win over Salisbury, freshman
point guard Dan Engelstad hit a 16-foot jumper
at the buzzer to win the game. The Seahawks held Eastern to just
26% shooting from the floor in route to win number two for the season.
The Seahawks travel to McDaniel on Saturday and are then idle until
January 7 when they host Elizabethtown. Gallaudet will look to put
together a second three-game win streak as they play three games
in the next six days. Salisbury fell victim to Marques Fitch as
the sophomore hit a three-pointer from the right wing as time expired
to lift Virginia Wesleyan to a 69-67 win over the Sea Gulls on Friday.
Fitch raced the length of the floor in the final five seconds before
launching the game-winning shot. Salisbury had taken the lead with
five seconds remaining when Kyle Harmon completed
a traditional three-point play, scoring on a putback and converting
the free throw to cap a nine-point second half comeback for the
Sea Gulls. Harmon finished with 14 point in the game. Sophomore
Justin Rice paced the Gulls with 20 points, including three
treys, while guard Ray Williams added 10 points. Salisbury lost
earlier in the week on a buzzer-beater as SU fell to St. Mary’s
64-62 on Tuesday. Rice had 13 points while Harmon added 11 markers
of his own.
Men’s Basketball Notes for the Week:
Catholic won its sixth straight on Saturday as sophomore Matt
Tanner scored a career-high 15 points to lead three others
in double figures scoring. Senior Blair Mills netted
23 points on Monday, a career-best, and William Morley added 25
as CUA reached the century mark for the first time this season in
a 107-85 win at Villa Julie. Mary Washington ran its win streak
to three games this week with a pair of CAC wins. On Wednesday,
Kevin Moore led three players in double figures
with 17 points as the Eagles toppled Marymount 75-71 in Arlington.
Jon Hurd scored 14 points and added six rebounds in the
win. On Friday, freshman Mike Lee scored a career-high 21 points,
including 5-of-5 from beyond the arc, to push the Eagles past York
75-60. Mike Moore added 14 points while Hurd grabbed
a career-high 14 rebounds. Senior guard Evan Fowler
became the MWC career assist leader with his 502nd career assist,
a milestone he reached on Friday. He passed the previous mark of
501 set by Richie Treger from 1991-94. The Eagles return to action
on December 16 when the play sixth-ranked Buena Vista University.
Goucher got off to a 1-0 start in the CAC for the eighth time in
as many seasons as the Gophers posted a 72-63 win over St. Mary’s.
Pierre Jones joined David Clark, Bakari Ward, and
Tavar Witherspoon as the only players in Goucher history to score
at least 32 points in a game when he erupted for 32 in the Gophers’
84-68 loss to Marymount. Marymount evened their CAC record with
a road win on Saturday. Hot shooting helped the Saints as they shot
65.3% from the floor for the game. Sophomore Corey Diamond
had a good week as he converted 68.1% (15-22) of his shots from
the field in two games. He was 5-for-9 (55.5%) from beyond the arc.
York earned their first win of the season with a 72-62 victory over
Gallaudet. Sophomore Brandon Bushey has led the
Spartans in scoring in the last four games as he is averaging 22
points per game over that four-game stretch. Salisbury fell to Apprentice
in the championship game of the Optimist Classic on Saturday, 74-57.
Ray Williams had 13 points while Sean Whittaker
added 10 markers as he was named to the All-Tournament team. Earlier
in the week, Whittaker scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds
as four Sea Gulls reached double figures in the 90-68 win over Williamson
in the opening round of the tournament. Dameon Gibbs added
15 points and nine rebounds while guard Justin Rice chipped in with
13 points and Neil Tucker contributed 12 points.
In the Gulls’ CAC opener, Kyle Harmon had 13 points in the
79-62 loss to Catholic. Whittaker added 11 points while Rice tallied
10 points. Gibbs added seven points and a team-high seven rebounds.
St. Mary’s lost their lone contest this past week on the road
to Goucher, 72-63. The Sea Gulls play their first home contest of
the season this week as they host Salisbury and Eastern College.
Junior guard Matt Miller leads the team in scoring
with a 13.0 ppg average. Gallaudet sophomore Robert Haney
is averaging 25.6 points per game in his past five contests. Despite
a three-game losing streak, Gallaudet is enjoying a +7 rebounding
advantage over its opposition. The Bison have more than a week off
before facing three teams in six days.
Men’s Basketball Notes for the Week:
Catholic won their third straight game as they defeated Scranton
97-63 on Saturday. Sophomore Shane Sowden scored
a career-high 14 points and added five rebounds against the Royals
as he was one of four Cardinals to reach double figures. On Tuesday,
seniors William Morley scored 20 points and pulled
in six rebounds and Blair Mills added 18 points
to lead CUA past Haverford 98-90. Gallaudet had its first three-game
winning streak in nearly nine years when the Bison defeated Manhattenville,
Christendom, and McDaniel. The last three-game win streak for Gallaudet
came on December 8, 1994 when they beat Salisbury. Gallaudet was
runner-up at its Holiday Tournament. Robert Haney
and Brendan Stern were named to the All-Tournament
team. Mary Washington evened its record at 2-2 with an 83-56 win
over Christendom College on Tuesday. Fourteen different players
scored for the Eagles, led by Jon Hurd’s
12 points and Kevin Moore’s 11. Goucher’s Pierre
Jones was the leading scorer for the Gophers in Goucher’s
68-65 win over Guilford at the Myrtle Beach Thanksgiving Classic
as he was 7-for-10 from the field and tallied 17 points. In two
games at the tournament, the sophomore forward averaged 15 points
and six rebounds per contest. Marymount lost a tough home opener
on Sunday as NC Wesleyan defeated the Saints 80-78 on a buzzer beater.
Carlton Phelps led all scorers with 25 points,
following up his 30-point performance in the road loss to Christopher
Newport on Tuesday. Salisbury fell to Washington 93-79 on Tuesday.
Segun Odumeru paced the Gulls with 19 points on
6-for-8 shooting. He was also 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
Freshman Sean Whitaker added 13 points, while junior
Dameon Gibbs had 10. The Gulls fall to 1-2 on the
year and will host Catholic on Wednesday. St. Mary’s lost
their lone contest this past week on the road to Wilkes 74-65. Sophomore
Joe Farina leads the team in scoring with an 11.7 points
per game average. York continued their early season struggles as
they finished fourth at the York Invitational. The Spartans received
23 points from sophomore Brandon Bushey in the
opening round loss to Neumann. Bushey again led the Spartans in
the consolation game as he notched a team-high 24 points. Senior
T.J. Cioffi added a career-high 18 points in the
loss the Elizabethtown. Bushey leads the Spartans in scoring as
he is averaging 18.8 points per game. He is also shooting 47.7%
(21-44) from beyond the arc.
Men’s Basketball Notes for the Week:
Catholic senior William Morley was named to the
All-Tournament team at the 2003 F&M Sponaugle Tournament as
the Cardinals fell in overtime ot Guilford 98-96 in the season opener
but rebounded with a 72-61 victory the next night over Washington
& Lee. Morley scored 18 points in each contest for the Cardinals.
Gallaudet led for all but 15 second half on Saturday but they still
needed a basket in the final 30 seconds to earn the win.
Robert Haney hit the game-winner for the Bison who are
now 1-1. For the first time in more than a year, Haney isn’t
the team’s leading rebounder as junior Bradley Miller
is averaging 7.0 rebounds per game to Haney’s 6.0 rpg mark.
Goucher’s Trevor Quinn and Garrett
Smith were both chosen to represent Goucher on the All-Tournament
team at the Penn State Behrend Tip Off Classic. In addition to scoring
24 points, Quinn was credited with 13 rebounds, nine assists, four
steals and a blocked shot in two games. Smith came off the bench
to score a game-high 24 points against Hiram and added 13 more in
the title game. Marymount won their first game for first-year head
coach Scott McClary in the consolation round of
the Hampden-Sydney tournament. Carlton Phelps had
the hot hand in both games for the Saints as he scored 30 points
in the opening loss and then hit for 27 points in the win on Saturday.
Phelps was named to the All-Classic team. Salisbury came away from
their opening weekend with a 1-1 record at the Frostburg Tournament.
The Sea Gulls fell to Bridgewater 88-79 in the opener. Freshman
Segun Odumeru led Salisbury with 15 points while
Neil Tucker (14 points), Justin Rice
(13 points), and Ray Williams (10 points) also
reached double figures for Salisbury. The Sea Gulls bounced back
in the consolation game with a 78-73 overtime win over Waynesburg.
SU outscored Waynesburg 9-4 in the overtime to earn the win. Junior
Dameon Gibbs had 20 points and 13 rebounds. Sean
Whitaker added 16 points and 12 rebounds while Tucker had 12 points.
Mary Washington opened with a win against Villa Julie, and then
lost a pair of games over the weekend with come-from-behind shots
against them. The first one was a half-court buzzer beater by Marietta
and the second was a jumper with 12 seconds left against Shenandoah.
Guard Jon Hurd leads MWC with a 15.3 ppg through
the first three games. St. Mary’s dropped their first two
decisions of the season, both at the Johns Hopkins Blue Jay Invitational.
Sophomore forward Joe Farina and junior guard Matt
Miller led the team in scoring with an average of 11.5
ppg. York dropped their two games at the Heidelberg College Invitational.
The Spartans fell to eventual tournament champion John Jay 90-87
on Friday. Senior Steve Schmehl led the Spartans
with 25 points and six rebounds while Brandon Bushey
added 19 points including five threes. Junior Stephen Grimes
notched the double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. In the
Spartans’ consolation round loss to Heidelberg, Schmehl had
20 points while junior Ben Seibert added 15 points.
Bushey had 13 points for YCP.
