Men’s Soccer Notes for the Week: The 21st ranked Salisbury Sea Gulls defeated Gallaudet 10-0 in the opening round of the CAC tournament. John Muto and Jason Smith each scored two goals for Salisbury while Dan Meehan and Dan Lader each dished out two assists. Earlier in the week, Muto set a new single-game record with four assists as Salisbury defeated Gallaudet 6-0 in their regular season finale. Meehan and Chris Mills lead Salisbury with eight goals each while Meehan also has six assists. Sixteen different Sea Gulls have scored a goal this season while goalie Jason Cranford has made 58 saves and owns a goals against average of .050. Cranford’s save percentage is .879. York ended the CAC regular season with a 5-1 win over Goucher followed by a 2-0 win over Catholic in the tournament quarterfinals. Buddy Wirtz and Dan May each scored a goal in both games while Scott McDowell picked up a pair of tallies in the win over the Gophers. The Spartans have now won 14 matches in three of the last four years as this year’s senior class has a combined record of 52-28-4, good for a winning percentage of .643. St. Mary’s won their quarterfinal tournament round game this past week. Brian Wolcott scored the game-winning goal, his sixth of the season. The Seahawks have recorded at least 13 wins in three consecutive season for the first time in program history. The Seahawks travel to Salisbury for one semifinal contest. St. Mary’s is the only team to defeat Salisbury in the conference this season as the Seahawks won 1-0 on October 1. Marymount junior Jim Richards scored both goals for the Saints as they defeated Mary Washington for the first time ever in the CAC quarterfinals. Catholic defeated Gallaudet 2-0 in the regular season finale before falling to York in the first round of the CAC tournament. Senior Keith Cappo led the squad in goals (6), assists (3), and points (15). Freshman Evan Phillips played a bulk of the minutes in goal, registering a 4-9-1 record and a goals against average of 1.91. Phillips also had three shutouts. Despite closing out the season without a win in its final 12 games, Gallaudet still put together its most successful season in six years. The Bison had their first-ever four-game win streak, back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1984 and they were four games above the .500 for the first time since 1985.

Men’s Soccer Notes for the Week: Salisbury sophomore Christopher Mills scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute as #23 Salisbury defeated Marymount 3-2 on Sunday. Dan Lader and Bill Whittington each added goals in the win. Salisbury is currently riding a seven-game win streak. Earlier in the week, Dan Meehan and Mills each scored a pair of goals as the Gulls rolled past Christopher Newport 6-1 in a match-up of two South Region top five teams. Goalie Jason Cranford earned both wins for the week, his 10th and 11th of the season. Mary Washington’s Steve Ramos scored the game’s lone goal in a 1-0 win over York on Saturday. York dropped both of their games this week as they have now lost three straight and four of their last five after starting the season 11-2-1. St. Mary’s won both of their contests this past week. Junior forward Brian Wolcott scored both goals in the Seahawks’ 2-1 double overtime win over Gettysburg and added one goal and one assist in the 5-0 shutout of Gwynedd-Mercy. The Seahawks have recorded at least 12 wins in three consecutive seasons for the first time in school history. The Seahawks are now idle until the first round of the CAC tournament on Saturday. Goucher’s Logan Herring tallied the fastest goal from the start of the game in the 15-year history of Goucher’s men’s soccer program when he put the Gophers ahead 1-0 just :41 into their 4-0 victory over Gallaudet. Kevin Bartruff’s penalty kick in the 58th minute accounted for all of the scoring in the Gophers’ 1-0 win over Catholic. Freshman goalkeeper Tom Feuerstein made a total of three saves in picking up his fourth and fifth shutouts of the season. Marymount’s Justin Kessler had three goals in the Saints’ last two games, including the game-winner against Gallaudet. Kessler leads the Saints in scoring with 19 points. Catholic lost two close games this week as the Cardinals prepare for the upcoming CAC tournament. With a win over Gallaudet in the regular season finale on Thursday, Catholic can clinch the number seven seed. It was a rough week for Gallaudet as the Bison broke in an interim head coach against a CAC foe. The Bison have two more chances this season for their first CAC win since 1997.

Men’s Soccer Notes for the Week: Salisbury defeated Mary Washington 2-1 in a critical CAC game on Saturday. Dan Lader had a goal and an assist while Christopher Mills notched the other goal. Earlier in the week, Salisbury notched its fourth straight shutout and ninth of the season as they defeated #19 Roanoke 2-0. Mills and David Pusinsky each scored in the win. Salisbury has eight different players with two or more goals. Dan Meehan leads the team with five goals while Mills has four and Chris Tracy has three tallies. York went 1-1 for the week as they defeated Dickinson 3-1 on Wednesday before falling to Messiah 4-0 on Saturday. Dave Shultz, Jeremy Klunk, and Dan May scored for the Spartans in the win over Dickinson. The Messiah game saw the Falcons score three goals in the last 17 minutes of the game to turn close 1-0 game into a lopsided result. St. Mary’s split their two matches this past week as they lost to Marymount 1-0 and defeated Goucher 1-0. The loss at Marymount snapped a four-game winning streak for SMC. Freshman forward David Reumont scored the game-winning goal against Goucher in the 86th minute of play. It was Reumont’s third goal of the season. Marymount has won three matches in a row. Freshman Dylan Hide had a hat trick in the win over Chowan, including the game-winner in the first half. Gallaudet is winless in their past six games, going 0-5-1 over that stretch. The Bison are hoping to find home more hospitable as they play five of their final six regular season games at home. The also close the season with four straight CAC contests.

Men’s Soccer Notes for the Week: York College dropped their first CAC game of the year when Salisbury posted a 1-0 overtime win in York on Saturday. The Spartans have lost three games this year with all three losses come by one goal at home. Two of those three losses have come in overtime. The loss snapped the Spartans seven-match win streak. Salisbury recorded their eighth shutout of the season with their 1-0 overtime win over York. Christopher Mills scored the game-winning goal off a pass from Bill Whittington just 3:25 into overtime to win the game. Salisbury also won their other game of the week 1-0 as John Muto scored the game’s only goal in the win over Goucher. St. Mary’s won their lone match this past week with a 4-2 win over Alvernia. Junior goalie Mike Mitchell saw his scoreless streak end at 451:27 on an Alvernia penalty kick in the second half of the game. Junior forward Brian Wolcott scored the game-winning goal against Alvernia, giving him a team-leading fourth game-winner of the season. Mary Washington lost its first-ever CAC regular season match against an opponent other than Salisbury in a 3-0 defeat at Catholic on Thursday. Goucher’s Kevin Bartuff tallied his second goal of the season in Goucher’s 2-1 loss at Rutgers-Camden. Marymount snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-0 win over Bluefield College. Nathan Franks had the game-winner in the first half. Catholic’s Evan Phillips made 10 saves as Catholic defeated Mary Washington 3-0 to earn its first CAC win of the season on Thursday. Junior Dan Kane added two goals. Phillips then added his second straight shutout on Saturday as the Cardinals blanked LaRoche 1-0. Gallaudet scored an own goal in the final ten minutes against Maryland Bible and then needed to score in the final minute of regulation to force overtime. The game ended in a 1-1 tie. The Bison then let a 2-0 halftime lead against Bluefield slip away. Freshman Matthew Eby has been overshadowed by sophomore Mike Higgins but he’s managed to score seven goals this season.

Men’s Soccer Notes for the Week: York College improved to 3-0 in the CAC with their 2-1 win over Gallaudet on Thursday. The Spartans have now won five straight and have had 12 different players score goals this season. Nine of those 12 players have scored at least two goals with Scott McDowell leading the team with seven goals. Jeremy Klunk, Steve Nguyen, and Chris White each had two goals for the week. The Spartans are now ranked fourth in the South Region. Goucher’s Logan Herring tallied the game-winning goal in the final minute of the first half in Goucher’s 2-1 win over Marymount. Herring picked up assists in both of the Gophers’ goals in the 2-1 win over Albright. St. Mary’s won all three of their matches this past week via the shutout. Junior goalie Mike Mitchell has a consecutive scoreless streak of 382:15 dating back to the second half against Virginia Wesleyan on September 11. Junior forward Brian Wolcott scored the game-winning goals against both Salisbury and Christopher Newport and is currently tied for the team lead in that category with senior forward Bobby Ratcliffe, who scored the game-winner against Gallaudet on Monday, with three each. Mary Washington is ranked sixth in the South Region this week by the NSCAA. Salisbury’s Dan Meehan was all over the field for the Sea Gulls as he scored a pair of goals and added three assists as Salisbury blanked Catholic 6-0 on Saturday. Meehan leads the team in both goals and assists with five and three respectively. Chris Tracy is second with three goals. Marymount’s Agner Hernandez had the game-winner in overtime against Catholic to give the Saints their first CAC win of the year. Gallaudet dropped two straight for the second time this season when it lost to St. Mary’s and York. The Bison look to rebound this week with games against Maryland Bible College and Bluefield College. Mike Higgins continues his stellar play with 10 goals and six assists. Catholic is still searching for its first CAC win of the year after falling to Marymount and Salisbury this week. Goalie Ryan Petyak recorded his second shutout of the season in Sunday’s 1-0 win over Columbia Union. The sophomore posted three saves in the win.

Men’s Soccer Notes for the Week: York College posted their first two CAC wins of the year with a 2-1 win at Marymount and a 1-0 victory over St. Mary’s at home. Sophomore Scott McDowell and junior Dave Shultz scored in the win over the Saints. Junior Dan May scored the game-winner against St. Mary’s with just 2:41 remaining in regulation. The shutout against St. Mary’s was the Spartans’ fourth of the season and goalie Michael Cook’s third whitewashing. Mary Washington was ranked seventh in the region this week by the NSCAA. Goucher goalkeepers Ted Domers and Tom Feuerstein each picked up a shutout while playing a combined 211:03 during the Gophers 1-0-1 week. Domers made four saves in the win over Dickinson and Feuerstein stopped five shots as the Gophers battled Mary Washington to a scoreless tie. Ben Zabiegalski’s team-leading third goal of the season 1:03 into the second overtime gave the Gophers a 1-0 win over Dickinson. Salisbury, the number 23 team in the country, played NC Wesleyan to a 0-0 tie at home on Saturday. The Sea Gulls outshot NCW 29-12 including 8-1 in overtime. Salisbury had a 17-7 advantage in corner kicks. Salisbury Jason Cranford made five saves, including a pair of fantastic saves, to keep the game a scoreless tie. Gallaudet has its first five-game win streak in school history thanks to Friday’s 6-3 win over Lancaster Bible College. The Bison now have as many wins this year as the previous five season combined. Mike Higgins added two goals and an assist as he now has 25 points in eight games. The Bison play two CAC matches this week and are looking for their first conference win since 1997. St. Mary’s lost both of their matches this past week on the road. The two match losing streak comes almost one full year from the Seahawks last two-match skid (9/28/02-10/2/02). The 1-0 loss to York was the first shutout recorded against the Seahawks since a 2-0 setback to Salisbury on Oct. 2, 2002. Catholic picked up its first win of the season, beating John Jay 6-2 on Saturday night. Senior Keith Cappo scored twice, giving him five goals for the season.

Men’s Soccer Notes for the Week: St. Mary’s opened their 2003 conference schedule with a 6-0 victory at Catholic. Senior midfielder Vince La Porta scored his first two goals of the season in the victory. The Seahawks are off to their best start in school history at 5-0, surpassing the previous record of 4-1 accomplished last season. Salisbury junior Markus Hunkeler scored the game's only goal at 46:12 of the match and the Sea Gulls registered their fourth shutout of the season in a 1-0 non-conference win at Eastern on Wednesday. Salisbury, ranked fourth in the South Region, improves to 4-1-1 overall. Dan Meehan leads the team with three goals. Bill Whittington, Chris Tracy and Reid Klopp each have two goals. Goalie Jason Cranford has started all five games, making 17 saves. Gallaudet’s 5-2 start has the Bison three games above .500 for the first time since 1985 when they finished 7-4-1. The Bison also have their first four-game winning streak since 1984. Sophomore Mike Higgins is a big part of the success as he has a team-high eight goals and four assists. The Bison are looking for their first conference win since 1997.Mary Washington was ranked 20th in the nation and third in the South Region this week. The Eagles dropped a 2-1 double overtime decision to Longwood University, who is moving to Division I this year. MWC played a man down for the last 81:30 of the contest due to a red card. York College dropped two one-goal decisions this week. Sophomore Scott McDowell and senior Chad Gensemer scored the Spartan goals against Gettysburg. The Spartans’ defensive scoreless streak was snapped at 328:14 with Gettysburg’s first goal. The shutout loss to Arcadia was the first time the Spartans have been held scoreless this year. Marymount had their rescheduled game against Shepherd postponed again due to Hurricane Isabel. Goucher freshmen Ben Zabiegalski and Nick Kiss scored the first goals of their collegiate careers during Goucher’s 0-3 week. Zabiegalski accounted for the Gophers only goals in the losses to Haverford and McDaniel while Kiss scored in the second half of the 4-1 loss to Lebanon Valley. After having back-to-back draws to open the season, Catholic has lost three straight games. Senior Keith Cappo scored twice to account for the Cardinals’ scoring against Shenandoah. He leads the team with three tallies on the season.

Men’s Soccer Notes for the Week: St. Mary’s opened their 2003 home schedule with two victories this past week. Senior midfielder Alun Oliver scored the game-winning goal and added one assist against Virginia Wesleyan and tallied three more assists in the shutout of Swarthmore. Junior forward Brian Wolcott (3g, 0a) tied Oliver (1g, 4a) in points (6) for the week, by adding three goals for the Seahawks. York College continued their shutout streak on Wednesday as they blanked Elizabethtown 3-0. Junior Matt Morgan tallied two goals in the win while Michael Cook posted his third straight shutout. The Spartan defense is currently carrying a shutout streak of 297:38. Mary Washington was ranked third in the South Region last week and also 21st in the nation. The Eagles fell for the first time this season as they lost at Messiah College, the defending national champions, 2-0 on Saturday. Salisbury improved to 3-1-1 with a 7-0 shutout of Villa Julie. Sophomore Chris Tracy scored twice and Algerson Vincent recorded two assists to pace Salisbury. Goalies Jason Cranford and Scott McGuire combined on the shutout. Senior Dan Meehan leads Salisbury with three goals on the season. Gallaudet has won three straight games for the first time since 1997 and recorded back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1995. The four wins this year are the most since 1997’s seven wins and with two more victories, the Bison will match their combined win total for the past five years. Sophomore Mike Higgins leads the team with six goals and two assists. Marymount scored the most goals in at least six years with their 9-0 win over Lancaster Bible. Junior Jim Richards had the hat trick, scoring three times in the game. Catholic had their two CAC games rained out this week, Friday against Marymount and Saturday against York.

Men’s Soccer Notes for the Week: Mary Washington is led by senior Roberto Morales with three goals, having scored the first goal in all three games. St. Mary’s has been idle since their 8-0 win on August 31st. The Seahawks finally get to play their first home match of the season on Thursday when they host Virginia Wesleyan. York recorded two shutouts this week as junior goalie Michael Cook made eight saves in the two games combined. The Spartans received two goals in the win over Scranton from Scott McDowell while Jason Blotzer had a goal and two assists in the Scranton game and the game-winning goal over Eastern Mennonite. Goucher’s freshman goalkeeper, Tom Feuerstein, has a goals against average of 0.33 and a .947 save percentage having allowed just one goal in three games. Feuerstein made nine saves in the 3-0 win over Ursinus. Salisbury recorded their first loss of the season in the championship game at the Greensboro Tournament, as Greensboro scored all three of its goals in a six minute span. In the tournament’s first round, the Sea Gulls received goals from Dan Meehan, Chris Mills, and Bill Whittington as the Gulls downed Piedmont 3-0. Gallaudet needed just 10 days to equal its win total from last year at two. Nathan Boyes has scored three of the seven goals from the Bison so far this season. Catholic opened their season with ties of 1-1 against Wesley and 0-0 against Washington College. Senior Keith Cappo has the Cardinals only goal of the season in the tie with Wesley. Marymount played two overtime games this week and picked up their first win and tie of the season as they defeated Albright 2-1 at the Mary Washington Tournament.
