Notes:
Men's Swim Notes (2/3/04):
Mary Washington topped Randolph-Macon 155-48 on Saturday to close
out its most successful regular season ever as they completed the
campaign 12-1. Senior Justin Snyder won the 200 fly with an NCAA
provisional cut of 1:56.35. York won their final regular season
meet of the year to reach eight wins for the first time in over
a decade. Joseph Farrell posted a pair of wins in the victory over
Misericordia. Farrell won the 50 free and the 100 butterfly while
Brett Young (200 free), Howard Tucker (400 IM), and Adam Melson
(100 breaststroke) each picked up individual wins in the meet. Marymount
had two individual winners in the meet at Washington & Lee.
Walter Harris captured the win in the 50 free (:22.89) and Steve
Menard won the 200 breaststroke (2:22.92).
Men's Swim Notes (1/27/04):
Mary Washington topped Gettysburg 120-85 on Saturday, marking the
second straight year that the Eagles have topped the Bullets and
the first time ever in Gettysburg. Individually, the 400 medley
relay team won their event with a time of 3:40.47. Will Brunner
won the 200 IM and the 200 butterfly while Brian Craddock won the
500 free and Bryan Stiffler captured first in the 200 breaststroke.
In York’s win over Salisbury on Saturday, Brett Young picked
up a pair of firsts as he won the 200 free and the 50 free. Chris
Howard (1000 free), Adam Melson (200 IM), Hal Rucker (200 butterfly),
and Jimmy Heiner (200 backstroke) each earned firsts for the Spartans.
Marymount’s Anthony Portare won six individual races in two
weekend meets which the Saints split. In the loss to CUA, Portare
won the 200 free, the 200 fly and the 500 free. In the win over
Randolph-Macon, he captured the 200 free, the 200 IM and the 500
free. Salisbury split a pair of meets this weekend. They defeated
St. Mary’s at home on Friday and then fell to York on Saturday.
Against St. Mary’s, Bryan Matonak won the 800 free while Cole
Mangum won the 50 free. Sophomore Gary Stewart won the 100 free
while Ryan Kooy won the 100 breaststroke. St. Mary’s fell
to Salisbury 82-67 as senior Julio Zarate took first in three events.
Zarate won the 200 free, the 100 backstroke, and the 400 free.
Men's Swim Notes (1/20/04):
Mary Washington fell for the first time this season, losing to UMBC
146-102 on Monday evening. In York’s win over Ursinus, Hal
Rucker earned a pair of first place finishes and a second. Rucker
was a member of the winning 200 medley relay team and then captured
first in the 100 fly. Rucker notched a second place finish in the
50 free. Joseph Farrell also picked up a pair of firsts and a second.
Farrell was also a member of the 200 medley relay team while he
also won the 100 free. Farrell placed second in the 200 free. Goucher’s
Sam Bouchelle was the top performer in two events in the tri-meet
against Salisbury and Catholic. He touched the wall first in the
1000 free and the 500 free. Salisbury’s Gary Stewart was a
three-time winner in the Sea Gulls’ meet against Goucher and
Catholic. He won the 100 breast against CUA and Goucher and won
the 200 IM against the Gophers. St. Mary’s did not swim against
Gallaudet as the Bison could not field a men’s team. The Seahawks
have a pair of trips this weekend, traveling to Salisbury on Friday
and then Catholic on Saturday.
Men's Swim Notes (12/8/03):
The Mary Washington Eagles placed first at the eight team F&M
Invitational thanks to wins from Will Brunner in the 200 and 400
IMs; from the team of Scott Baker, Bryan Stiffler, Justin Snyder
and Brian Craddock in the 400 yard medley and from Baker, Stiffler,
Snyder and James Thomas in the 200 yard medley. In addition, Snyder
won the 100 butterfly with a NCAA B cut time of 51.54. The Marymount
Saints finished second at the Randolph-Macon Invitational as two
Saint swimmers set Estes Pool records; Anthony Portare in the 400
IM (4:47.17) and Steve Menard in the 200 breast (2:18.16). Menard
also won the 100 breaststroke and the 200 IM. In addition, Willy
Harris captured the 100 fly. The St. Mary’s Seahawks finished
eighth at the F&M Invitational as Julio Zarate finished fifth
in the 100 backstroke, ninth in the 200 butterfly and twelfth in
the 500 freestyle (4:58.82, a personal best). Chris Goodman finished
eighth in the 400 IM and twelfth in the 200 butterfly. (Written

Men's Swim Notes (11/25/03):
The Salisbury men finished fifth of seven teams at the Kutztown
Invitational. Cole Mangum’s fifth place finish in the 50 freestyle
and Gary Stewart’s fifth place showing in the 100 breaststroke
were the top performances by the Sea Gull men. Goucher’s Jon
Claus won two events in the Marymount meet, posting his fastest
times of the season in the 50 free (:23.13) and the 100 free (:49.32).
Mary Washington finished its dual meets for the fall semester with
a sweep of Gallaudet and York on Saturday. The Eagles are 10-0 for
the second straight year. Marymount won six events in the meet at
Goucher. Anthony Portare and Steve Menard each won two races to
pace the Saints. Menard was also on the winning 400 freestyle relay
team. St. Mary’s participated in the Terrapin Invitational
over the weekend but did not score as a team. Gallaudet sophomore
James Fisher broke two school records this week. He lowered his
own time in the 50 freestyle and he broke the team record in the
100 breaststroke.
Men's Swim
Notes (11/19/03): Mary Washington defeated Georgetown 115-90
on Friday and then topped St. Mary’s and Goucher on Saturday
to remain undefeated at 8-0 on the season. Brian Craddock won the
200 free and the 500 free in the win over Georgetown. York lost
their first meet on Sunday as they fell to Catholic University 110-92
in a CAC meet. Salisbury’s Ryan Kooy finished first in the
50 free with a time of :23.03. Teammate Kellen Failor finished first
in the 100 backstroke, clocking in with a time of 1:01.99 as the
Sea Gulls had four firsts, two seconds and nine thirds in the 102-100
loss at Washington College. St. Mary’s lost both ends of its
tri-meet with Goucher and Mary Washington this past weekend. Seniors
Julio Zarate and Chris Goodman led the Seahawks, accounting for
75% of the scoring against MWC and 50% of the scoring against Goucher.
The Seahawks are in their second year of having no home matches
due to the reconstruction of Somerset Hall. St. Mary’s will
have a new 50-meter pool is scheduled to open in the fall of 2004.
