Notes:
Men's Tennis Notes (May 4): Eighth-ranked
Mary Washington advanced to the NCAA national quarterfinals for
the second straight season with weekend wins over Carnegie Mellon
and Swarthmore. The Eagles came from behind to top Swarthmore after
dropping the doubles point by winning four of the five completed
singles matches. MWC’s Matt Rogers came back
from a 5-2 first set deficit to win, 7-5, 6-0.
Men's Tennis Notes (April 27): Mary
Washington, the eighth ranked team in the nation, improved to 13-3
on the season and 13-1 against Division III teams with a 5-2 win
over #19 Bates College without #3 player Jon Clair. The Eagles will
look to possibly host the NCAA regionals this weekend. Goucher’s
Andrew Danos, who dropped a three-set match to
Mary Washington’s Tim Ryan in the flight
one singles finals at the CAC Championships, finished the 2003-04
season with a 22-6 record in singles play, leaving him just one
win shy of tying the school record for singles wins in a season.
St. Mary’s won four matches in a season for the first time
since the 2001 season when they finished 5-5 overall.

Men's Tennis Notes (April 13): Mary
Washington, the ninth ranked team in the nation, swept Swarthmore
and Goucher on Saturday after falling earlier in the week to James
Madison. The Eagles are now 11-1 against Division III opponents
for the season. Goucher extended its winning streak to six matches
by beating St. Mary’s 6-1 but the streak was stopped by a
6-1 loss to ninth-ranked Mary Washington. Andrew Danos
secured the Gophers’ only point against the Eagles with his
2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1 victory over Jon Clair at first
singles, raising his record in singles play this season to 19-5.
St. Mary’s went 1-3 this past week. Freshmen Drew
Pierce and David Huber both went 31- for
the week for SMC. The Seahawks have won three matches in a season
for the first time since the 2001 season when they finished 5-5.
In Salisbury’s lone match of the week, Swarthmore defeated
the Sea Gulls 5-2. Salisbury’s number one singles player Scott
Mayberry and number two singles player Nick Peel,
who is ranked 27th nationally, were both winners for the Gulls.
Men's Tennis Notes (April 6): The
Goucher tandem of Andrew Danos and David
Sands became the all-time winningest doubles team in school
history with their victory at first doubles in the Gophers’
7-0 triumph over Villa Julie. The duo is 15-5 in doubles play this
season. Danos also picked up his team leading 17th singles win of
the season against the Mustangs. The ninth ranked Mary Washington
College Eagles swept Salisbury and the University of the South this
weekend to improve to 9-2 overall and 9-1 against Division III opponents.
Junior Tim Ryan, the Eagles’ #1 singles player,
swept both of his singles and doubles matches, and will look to
move up in the national rankings which come out soon. Salisbury
fell to 5-5 with a 7-0 loss to Mary Washington. St. Mary’s
won their lone match of the week with a 7-0 win over the College
of Southern Maryland. The win is the second consecutive victory
for the Seahawks who had lost their previous 15 matches.
Men's Tennis Notes (March 30): In
a battle of nationally ranked Division III teams, Goucher came out
on top against Johns Hopkins, 5-2. The Gophers, ranked #12 in the
Atlantic South Region, gained the upper hand over the 16th ranked
Blue Jays by capturing the doubles point before getting straight
set wins from Andrew Danos at first singles and
Brandon Harris at number two singles. Danos is
15-5 in singles play in 2003-04.
Catholic went 0-2 this week as they fell to Dickinson and Division
I Loyola College. St. Mary’s won their first match in over
two full calendar years with the 6-1 win over Villa Julie on Sunday.
Prior to that win, SMC had not won a match since March 8, 2002 at
Virginia Wesleyan. The Seahawks took all three doubles matches and
won five of the six singles matches. The Seahawks try to keep the
momentum going this week with three more matches, beginning with
the College of Southern Maryland on Tuesday afternoon. Salisbury
had a 1-1 week as they defeated the University of the South, 4-3,
before falling to Pomona-Pitzer, 5-2. Highlights for Salisbury against
Pomona-Pitzer were David Finlayson recording a
sraight-set victory and Tyler Robinson getting
a win.
Men's Tennis Notes (March 23): Catholic
had their six-match spring win streak snapped as Division II University
of the District of Columbia handed CUA a 4-3 loss on Friday. The
ninth-ranked MWC men’s tennis team defeated #8 Washington
& Lee on Saturday to imrpove to 7-2 overall and 7-1 against
Division III teams. Senior Dan Uyar and junior
Matt Rogers won three sets with the Eagles trailing
3-2 in the match to give MWC the win. Goucher won two of three matches
it played during its spring break trip to San Antonio, TX, losing
only to Division II Incarnate Word. Despite dropping the first sets
in five of the six singles matches, the Gophers collected four wins
in singles play on the way to a 5-2 win over Schreiner. In the 5-2
triumph over Texas Lutheran, David Vermeire had
to win a second-set tiebreaker and fight off a triple match point
in the third set to come away with a 2-6, 7-6 (8-3), 7-5 win. The
Salisbury men’s tennis team went 1-1 for the week. Nick
Peel, the 27th ranked singles player in the nation, was
a winner at #2 singles against Christopher Newport and a winner
at #1 singles against Mississippi College. Peel, also ranked #10
with Scott Mayberry in #1 doubles, recorded a pair
of victories. St. Mary’s lost their first conference match
of the season, falling at York College 7-0 on Sunday. The Seahawks
will play three matches this upcoming week and are looking for their
first win since their 2002 season opener.
Men's Tennis Notes (March 15): After
suffering a 7-0 loss to Washington, the 18th ranked team in Division
III, Goucher took off for its spring break trip to San Antonio,
TX. The Gophers’ first match in the lone star state against
Trinity, the 2000 NCAA Division III national champion, was cancelled
due to rain. Mary Washington, who are ranked ninth in the nation,
topped Methodist 7-0 in the Eagles home opener. Every match took
just two sets except at number one singles as Tim Ryan posted
a 6-7 (5), 6-0, 6-1 come-from-behind win. Salisbury knocked off
Piedmont 3-0 on Wednesday before falling to Washington & Lee
6-1 on Saturday. David Finlayson recorded a win
for the Gulls against Washington & Lee 6-4, 6-7 (2), 10-8.
Men's Tennis Notes (March 8): Goucher’s
number one doubles team of Andrew Danos and David
Sands pulled off an 8-4 upset of Salisbury’s Nick
Peel and Scott Mayberry, the nation’s
10th ranked Division III doubles team according to the ITA. The
Danos-Sands tandem is 8-3 so far in 2003-04. Mary Washington, the
ninth ranked team in the nation, won four of five matches in California
including a big 6-21 win over #12 Cal Lutheran and another victory
over #25 Pomona-Pitzer. MWC is 5-1 against Division III opponents
this year. Salisbury improved their record to 1-1 as they won their
initial conference match of the year, defeating Goucher 7-0 on Saturday.
St. Mary’s lost their 2004 home opener to Virginia Wesleyan
8-1. The Seahawks number two doubles team of junior James
Marti and sophomore Ken Aherndt earned
an 8-4 win for the Seahawks’ lone point.
