CAC Softball News and Notes:

Softball Notes for the Week (May 4): Salisbury jumped two spots in the latest national poll and now sit at #2 nationally. The Gulls finished their regular season with a pair of wins (8-3 and 2-0) over Gettysburg to improve to 35-5. Erin Ruest picked up the win in the first game, pitching 2.1 innings of scoreless ball in relief. She also went 4-for-5 at the plate with three doubles, a pair of RBIs and two runs scored. Tee Dronenburg was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and Kim Rementer went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Lacey Lister improved her pitching record to 25-1 with the win in game two, throwing a three-hit shutout She also struck out 12. Dronenburg went 2-for-3 and Ruest went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Nichole Fuqua added a double in the win.

Softball Notes for the Week (April 27): Salisbury, the fifth ranked team in the nation, recorded four wins this weekend as they swept Virginia Wesleyan and Villa Julie. In the opening win over VWC, Kareem Falcon went 2-for-3 with one run scored while Nichole Fuqua, Rosie Aley, Leslie White, and Kristy Shaffer each added hits in the win. Lacey Lister improved her season record to 22-1 by allowing just two hits as she struck out nine. In the second game, Falcon recorded a double and added an RBI. Serena Fleming went 2-for-4 while Shaffer was 2-for-3 as the Gulls won in extra innings. Lister improved to 23-1 with the victory on the mound. She worked seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits while fanning five in seven innings of relief. York College continues to creep up on the .500 mark as the green and white went 3-1 last week.The Spartans outscored their opponents last week 22-5. The Spartans hit .298 for the week while the pitching staff fashioned an ERA of 1.12. Sophomore Colleen Dugan pitched the best game of the week for YCP as she twirled a three-hit shutout in the win over Villa Julie. Dugan struck out five and did not walk a batter. Catholic ended the 2004 season with a double dip sweep of Villa Julie on Saturday. Sarah Galloway allowed just one run over seven innings and added a solo home run in CUA’s 4-1 win in game one. Catholic took game two, 8-0, as senior Jessica Payne cranked a three-run homer and sophomore Natalie Banaszewski threw a two-hitter in the win. Gallaudet shortstop Laura Lohmeyer combined to hit .286 (4-for-14) with two RBIs and two runs scored in her final week of the season, giving her a season ending batting average of .402.

Softball Notes for the Week (April 20): Salisbury took one step closer to a berth in the NCAA Division III softball tournament as Kareem Falcon and Lacey Lister led the Sea Gulls to their eight straight CAC softball championship with a 6-0 win over MWC in the championship game. Lister threw the shutout in the championship game as MWC could manage just four hits off the sophomore. Lister struck out 11 and walked three in the win. Falcon was 3-for-5 on Saturday and was a perfect 3-for-3 in the title game with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Senior Rosie Aley was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Freshman Tee Dronenburg went 2-for-3 with an RBI while fellow frosh Serena Fleming and junior Leslie White both had doubles in the game. In Saturday’s 15-0 romp over Catholic, Fleming was 4-for-4 with a double and two RBIs while Lister struck out six to earn the win. In Saturday’s win over MWC, Nichole Fuqua and Falcon each went 2-for-3 while Lister struck out eight in the win. York College failed to advance to the CAC Championship game for the first time in four years. The Spartans, who finished second in the regular season, recorded their highest regular season finish since 2000 when the Spartans finished tied for first in the conference. Mary Washington advanced to the CAC Championship game by downing York on both Saturday and Sunday. Abbey Wineland pitched all four games for the Eagles this weekend as she recorded a pair of wins and a pair of losses. Catholic advanced to the double elimination portion of the CAC tournament with a 9-1 win in the play-in game on Friday. Catholic had a frustrating time at the CAC tournament as CUA managed just five hits in two losses en route to being eliminated from the tournament. Gallaudet’s Laura Lohmeyer combined to hit 4-for-6 (.666) with three RBIs in a pair of contests this week.

Softball Notes for the Week (April 13): Salisbury, the fifth ranked team in the nation, rallied from an early 3-0 deficit for a 5-4 win in game two to complete a conference-clinching sweep of York College on Saturday. The Sea Gulls, by virtue of the sweep, secured the top seed in this weekend’s CAC tournament. Erin Ruest had a big day against Catholic as she was 5-for-6 with 11 RBI, four home runs and four runs scored. Leslie White, Kim Rementer, and Rose Aley went 2-for-3 and collected a double in the first game. Lacey Lister and Tonya Nickerson combined for Salisbury’s 11th no-hitter in school history and fourth perfect game in the 6-0 win over Catholic. Lister got the win in both games against the Cardinals. Against York, Lister picked up her 17th and 18th wins of the season, pitching a combined 11 innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits as she walked two and struck out 11. White was a combined 4-for-6 in the two games with four RBIs and a walk. Rementer went 2-for-3 in the opening game and Aley was 2-for-3 in the second game. York College went 3-5 in a very busy week. Sophomore catcher Caitlyn Fedorishen had a solid week for YCP as she hit .423 (11-26) with six runs scored an two RBIs. Fellow sophomore Laura Hauck also had a good week as she hit .381 (8-21) with three runs scored, three RBIs and a home run. Mary Washington won four CAC games this week to improve to 5-3 in league play. Sophomore pitcher Abby Wineland threw a one-hitter in game one as the Eagles topped Catholic 1-0 and 4-3 on Monday. She then shutout Gallaudet 6-0 as part of MWC sweep over the Bison on Wednesday.

Softball Notes for the Week (April 6): York College won both of their games this week as they swept Gallaudet 14-0 and 11-0. The big story of the game was that freshman Danielle Ditzel and senior Colleen Price combined to no-hit the Bison. Ditzel tossed the first three innings allowing just a two-out walk in the second while Price, making her first appearance of the season after an off-season injury, tossed a perfect final two innings as she struck out three of the six hitters she faced. The Spartan offense was led by the duo of Caitlyn Fedorishen and Gabby Reckendorf as they each had three hits in game one. Fedorishen was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored while Reckendorf was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored. In the nightcap, sophomore Colleen Dugan earned the win as she tossed five shutout innings, allowing just two hits as she struck out five and did not walk a batter. Offensively, the Spartans received perfect games from Ashli Phillips and Reckendorf as they were both 3-for-3. Phillips added two RBIs and a pair of runs scored while Reckendorf supplied two runs scored and an RBI. Salisbury split a doubleheader with Mary Washington on Sunday. After trailing 3-0 after four innings, Salisbury came from behind to win game one 5-4. Salisbury scored three runs in the fifth inning and two in the sixth to take the win. Leslie White went 2-for-2 with a double, a run and an RBI. Megan Ellzy went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Nichole Fuqua was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Lacey Lister pitched seven innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits as she struck out 13 and walked four. Mary Washington won the second game 4-2. Mary Washington won three of four this week including a split with Salisbury on Sunday. Freshman Jessy Simon allowed just two hits in six innings in picking up her fifth win of the season.

Softball Notes for the Week (March 30): Salisbury, which has been ranked #1 in Division III since the season began, had a tough start to the week, dropping both ends of a doubleheader at Bridgewater on Monday. However, Salisbury posted its fourth doubleheader sweep of the season by downing Chowan 4-1 and 8-0 in a non-conference twinbill at home on Sunday. The Sea Gulls, who are now 21-4, reached the 20-win milestone for the 10th straight season. Junior pitcher Tonya Nickerson threw a complete game four-hitter in the opening win over Chowan. Salisbury finished the game with 10 hits including two each from senior Rosie Aley, freshman Nichole Fuqua, and sophomore Megan Ellzy. The Sea Gulls scored five runs on six hits in the third inning of game two to seize control. Sophomore pitcher Erin Ruest helped her own cause with a two-run single in the inning. Ruest (3-1) finished 2-for-3 in the nightcap and also earned the win. Freshman Serena Fleming finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI in the second game. Catholic junior Sarah Galloway cranked out three home runs this week as the Cardinals have won seven out of their last eight games. Galloway added 10 RBIs on the week to raise her team-leading total to 25. York College won three of four games this week including a sweep of Mary Washington on Saturday. Junior Brittany Malarkey hit .364 with five RBIs, four runs scored and three triples for the week. Freshman Stephanie Shaull was 2-0 for the week as she threw 12 innings, allowing one unearned run on eight hits. Opponents hit a paltry .167 against Shaull for the week.

Softball Notes for the Week (March 23): Top ranked Salisbury has been on a roll for the last two seasons. The Sea Gulls have won their last four, 10 of their last 11, 19 of 21 games this season and 43 of their last 48 games stretching back to last season. The Sea Gulls posted a 4-1 record at the East Coast Classic in Salem, VA this past Friday and Saturday. After losing its opening game to Marietta, 4-1, Salisbury recorded wins over Plattsburg (9-0), Ferrum (2-1 in 8 innings), Bridgewater (9-8), and Methodist (7-4) to conclude the tournament. Catholic junior Sarah Galloway pitched a no-hitter in the first game to highlight Catholic’s sweep of Hood on Saturday. Senior Jessica Payne was 1-for-3 with a two-run double and junior Mary Kate McGilley was also 1-for-3 with an RBI in game one. Galloway went 4-for-6 with two home runs against Washington College on Thursday. She also had three RBIs and a double. MWC rebounded to win a pair of games Saturday in the East Coast Classic after dropping three on Friday, including two in extra innings. Junior Jeanette Moses went 8-for-18 in the two-day event. York College went 2-3 at the East Coast Classic. The Spartans were led by sophomore Caitlyn Fedorishen as the catcher was 7-for-15 with five RBIs and three runs scored. Junior Brittany Malarkey hit .462 for the weekend as she drove in four, scored five and had one triple. Sophomore Nikki Fisher was the third Spartan to hit above .400 for the week as she was 7-for-17 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Softball Notes for the Week (March 16): The top-ranked Salisbury University Sea Gulls won seven of eight games during a busy week, including its last six, to improve to 15-1 for the season. The Gulls have outscored their opponents 117-12 during their first 16 games of the season. Salisbury began the week with a doubleheader split with Christopher Newport. The Gulls won the first game 3-0 behind a one-hit shutout from Lacey Lister. Lister struck out 10 in the win as Erin Ruest and Nichole Fuqua both went 2-for-3. In the second game, CNU scored two in the first off Lister and escaped with a 4-3 win. On the first day of the Sea Gull Invitational, Salisbury defeated Wilkes 7-2 and Rutgers-Camden 1-0. Against Wilkes, Leslie White went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Serena Fleming was 3-for-3 with one run scored. Against Rutgers-Camden, Lister went the distance with a three-hitter. Kareem Falcon, Fleming and Fuqua each had hits for the Gulls. On Saturday, Salisbury knocked off Kings 4-2 and shutout Lynchburg 2-0. In the win over Kings, Lister picked up her ninth win with 2.1 innings of perfect relief. White went 2-for-4 while Kirsty Shaffer was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Lister tossed a complete-game one-hitter in the victory over Lynchburg. Salisbury completed the week with a sweep of Manhattanville. Rosie Aley was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored while Shaffer went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored in game one. Mary Washington won three of four games at the Sea Gull Invitational this weekend. Second baseman Bevin Gekosky had an excellent week at the plate, going 10-for-14 (.714) in the four tournament games. Catholic went 2-3-1 this week. Junior Sarah Galloway leads the team in hitting (.375), hits (15), and extra base hits (4).

Softball Notes for the Week (March 8): Salisbury, the top ranked team in Division III, won two CAC games on Tuesday with a sweep of Gallaudet. The Sea Gulls then came back to sweep through the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament on Friday and Saturday with four straight victories to remain perfect at 8-0. In the opening win over Gallaudet, Rosie Aley went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Kareem Falcon went 1-for-1 with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs while Megan Ellzy notched a pair of hits. Sophomore Lacey Lister had 15 strikeouts to record the one-hit shutout. In the second game against the Bison, Falcon, Leslie White, Kim Rementer, and Suzy Gill all had multiple hits as the Gulls cruised. Tonya Nickerson pitched four innings and got the win. She allowed one unearned run with four strikeouts and two hits. York College went 2-3 at the Methodist College Early Bird Tournament.
