CAC Volleyball News and Notes:
Volleyball Notes for the Week: Gallaudet
had a difficult road to the CAC championship. In order to win the
CAC Championship, the Bison had to beat three teams with a combined
record of 75-25 entering their games with the Bison. Sophomore
Tamijo Foronda, Gallaudet’s Athlete of the Month
of October, had a fine November with 3.08 kills per game and a team-high
.358 hitting percentage. She was one of three Gallaudet players
to hit better than .350 for the tournament and the Bison as a team
had a .302 attack percentage. Their digs per game went up to 4.12
dpg during the conference tournament. The Bison accomplished something
they never had previously in the NCAA tournament as the Bison were
able to win a game in their 3-1 loss to Colorado College in the
first round at the University of LaVerne. In Gallaudet’s three
previous NCAA appearances, the Bison lost 3-0 in each contest.York
College finished second in the CAC tournament for the fifth time
in six championship appearances. The Spartans’ 26 wins are
tied for the third-most wins in school history. The 1991 YCP team
went 30-10 and the 1997 squad recorded 28 wins en route to their
CAC championship. Salisbury junior Lindsay Lawson and
sophomore Brittany Mister registered eight kills
to lead Salisbury to a 3-0 quarterfinal win over Goucher. The Sea
Gulls lost a 2-0 lead to Gallaudet as the Bison won the last three
games to knock Salisbury from the tournament. Trailing 9-6 in the
deciding fifth game, Gallaudet scored nine of the game’s final
12 points to secure the victory. Lawson led the Gulls this season
with 323 kills. Abbey Petrecca had 967 assists
while Mister led the team in digs with 336. Lawson and Mister each
had 66 service aces this year. St. Mary’s won their opening
round CAC tournament match against Mary Washington 3-2. The Seahawks
battled back from an 0-2 deficit to win the match. It was the first
conference tournament win for the Seahawks since the 1995 season
when they defeated Salisbury 3-0 in the opening round. Junior middle
blocker Nicole Tuttle led the team in both kills
(248) and blocks (76) for the season. Catholic ended its season
as the fourth-seeded Cardinals were upset to eventual champion Gallaudet
in a first round tournament match. The Cardinals, who played in
the past four CAC tournament final matches, were eliminated in the
first round for the first time since 1998. Marymount finished .271
percentage points better than last season. The Saints won nine more
contests and lost seven fewer than the 2002 season.
Volleyball Notes for the Week: Salisbury
enters the CAC tournament on a roll this week as the Sea Gulls ended
the regular season on a high note Saturday afternoon with a 3-0
win over Johns Hopkins. Freshman Abby Petrecca
led Salisbury with 26 assists and eight digs. Senior Suzanne
Powell added seven kills and eight digs. Junior Kim
Rementer tallied 14 digs and a kill while sophomore Brittany
Mister had 10 digs and nine kills. Junior Lindsay
Lawson finished with five kills and seven digs. The Sea
Gulls have now won a school record 15 straight matches and have
not lost since the September 20 match against Johns Hopkins. York
College extended their win streak to seven with four wins this week
including a clutch 3-2 win over Catholic on Tuesday evening. The
Spartans posted another five-set win on Thursday as the Spartans
downed Lebanon Valley 3-2 on YCP’s senior night. The Spartans
downed Goucher and McDaniel in a pair of matches on Saturday. Sophomore
Stephanie Good has been outstanding since returning to
the libero position for YCP. Since she took over the libero duties
on October 7, Good has 189 digs in 41 games, an team-leading 4.61
digs per game. Mary Washington closed out the regular season with
a pair of wins at home this week. The Eagles host sixth-seeded St.
Mary’s on Tuesday in the CAC quarterfinals. Catholic fell
to 4-3 in regular season CAC play for the first time since 1999
as York defeated the Cardinals 3-2 on Tuesday night. CUA then split
a pair of matches on Saturday at Messiah College, defeating the
Falcons before falling to Franklin & Marshall. Gallaudet finished
the regular season with four players with 200 or more kills and
two with 300 or more. Sophomore Valerie Trofimenkoff
finished the regular season first in the CAC in hitting percentage,
the second Gallaudet player in three years to finish the season
at the top of that list. For the Bison to advance to the semifinals
of the CAC tournament, they will need to defeat Catholic University
and the Cardinals have won six straight over the Bison. St. Mary’s
won their final regular season match, a 3-0 victory at Goucher.
Freshman Isabel Spake led the Seahawks offensively
as she drilled home 14 kills in the contest. Marymount freshman
Gala Garcia came up big in the five-game win over
Virginia Wesleyan with 21 kills and only three errors in 43 attempts.
She also had seven service aces and eight digs. Senior Mary
Carroll had 16 kills and seven digs in the same match.
Volleyball Notes for the Week: Salisbury
extended their school-record winning streak to 13 matches with a
3-0 win over Catholic. Junior outside hitter Lindsay Lawson
paced the Sea Gulls with 18 kills and nine digs. Sophomore outside
hitter Brittany Mister added 12 kills and 11 digs. Freshman setter
Abbey Petrecca had 41 assists and a team-high 13
digs. Senior middle hitter Suzanne Powell added
seven kills, two blocks, and a team-high five service aces. York
College won both of their matches for the week as senior Kerry
Casperson was again outstanding. The senior outside hitter
who is the reigning CAC Player of the Year, hit a blistering .568
with 28 kills and three errors in 44 attempts in six games. She
also contributed 20 digs, four service aces and five assists as
the Spartans have won 20 matches for the fourth time in the eight-year
tenure of head coach Sue DuMars. Catholic dropped
its second CAC regular season match of the year at the hands of
Salisbury on Wednesday. The Cardinals have not lost two CAC regular
season matches in a season since 1999, when CUA was 4-3 in conference
play. Gallaudet plays its most important match of the past two years
on Tuesday. The Bison have a shot to host a first-round CAC tournament
match with a win over first-place Salisbury, something no team at
Gallaudet has done since the volleyball squad accomplished the feat
in 2001. St. Mary’s went 2-2 this past week. Junior Nicole
Tuttle led the Seahawks offensively with a .416 hitting
percentage with 50 kills and eight errors in 101 total attempts
during the week. She also recorded eight block solos and eight block
assists. The Seahawks end their regular season on Tuesday when they
travel to Goucher. Marymount won their first CAC match of the year
as they defeated Goucher at home.
Volleyball Notes for the Week: Catholic
finished 2-1 at the Marymount Invitational on Saturday as the Cardinals
finished third. Senior Kathleen McGlynn was named
to the All-Tournament team as she totaled 28 kills, 12 total blocks,
and 36 digs in three matches. Salisbury won the McDaniel tournament
title as the Sea Gulls went 4-0 at the round-robin tournament. The
Sea Gulls’ four wins in the tournament extend their school-record
win streak to 12 matches. The 12 wins eclipse the old mark of 11
set in 1990 and tied in 1996. Junior Kim Rementer
was named to the All-Tournament team as she totaled 39 digs for
the tournament in addition to five assists. Salisbury opened their
week with a 3-0 win over St. Mary’s. Brittany Mister
had nine kills while Suzanne Powell added eight.
York College helped forge a four-way tie for first place as the
Spartans traveled to Mary Washington and posted a 3-1 victory. The
Spartans received 13 kills from both Kerry Casperson
and Kristin Hoffman. Casperson and Stephanie
Good each added 25 digs while junior Caitlin McIntosh
dished out 57 assists in addition to her 18 digs. Mary Washington’s
Johanna Carpenter had a team-high 14 kills in the
Eagles’ 3-0 win over Shenandoah on Saturday. Jackie
Durr had a match-high 33 digs in the Eagles’ loss
to York on Friday night. Gallaudet played in the McDaniel Tournament
where the Bison went 2-2 with four four-set matches. Gallaudet beat
Villa Julie and McDaniel but lost to Moravian and Richard Stockton.
The Bison have a critical stretch ahead of them beginning with a
match on Wednesday against Mary Washington. St. Mary’s lost
their lone match this past week, falling at home to Salisbury 3-0.
Junior middle blocker Nicole Tuttle led the Seahawks
offensively with ten kills in the loss while senior setter Jeannie
Long recorded a double-double with 20 assists and 11 digs.
Marymount finished fourth in their own Invitational. Mary
Carroll was named to the All-Tournament team as she had
43 kills and 32 digs in the three matches.
Volleyball Notes for the Week: Mary
Washington remained unbeaten in CAC play with a 3-0 win over St.
Mary’s on Wednesday. Catholic’s Kathleen McGlynn
was named to the All-Tournament team at the Bison Invitational hosted
by Gallaudet. Catholic finished second in the tournament with a
record of 3-1. With 19 wins on the season, Catholic is one win away
from its fifth straight season with 20 or more wins. Salisbury’s
Allison Pikounis registered 10 kills while freshman setter
Abbey Petrecca added seven kills, five aces, and
29 assists to lead the Gulls to a 3-0 win over Marymount. Salisbury
has now won a season-high seven matches. Senior Suzanne
Powell added seven kills, six digs, and three aces for
Salisbury who finished with 15 aces in the match. Lindsay
Lawson and Brittany Mister each finished
with five kills and seven digs for Salisbury. York College finished
1-3 at the Spike It Up! Classic at Colorado College in Colorado
Springs, CO this past weekend. The Spartans lost a pair of close
matches on Friday before bouncing back and splitting their two games
on Saturday. Senior Carla Gray was named to the
All-Tournament team, her first all-tournament team berth of the
season. Gallaudet had a rough week. The Bison had a pair of 3-0
wins but also lost two five-set matches after leading 2-0 in addition
to falling to Catholic on the road. Gallaudet finished third at
their own Bison Invitational while Catholic was second. Tamijo
Foronda and Valerie Trofimenkoff each
earned All-Tournament team honors. St. Mary’s finished third
at the Rutgers-Newark tournament over the weekend. Junior middle
blocker Nicole Tuttle was named to the All-Tournament
team. The Seahawks play their final home game of the season on Wednesday
against Salisbury. Marymount finished second in the Golden Dome
Invitational at Rutgers-Newark, falling to the hosts in the championship
match. The Saints finished the tournament with a record of 3-1.
Senior Mary Carroll was named to the All-Invitational
team.
Volleyball Notes for the Week: Mary
Washington swept Goucher 3-0 to improve to 3-0 in the CAC. Freshman
Kate Feldman had eight kills while Lauren
Eigel and Ashley Bull each added nine
kills and just one error for the Eagles in the win. Catholic rebounded
from their first CAC regular season loss by downing St. Mary’s
in three games on Thursday. Sophomore Mary McGlynn
totaled a game-high 12 kills. She added 12 more kills in Saturday’s
match at Haverford. Teammate April Wilson recorded
17 kills and 12 digs in the four-set win. Salisbury won its own
tournament last weekend as the Sea Gulls went 4-0 in the round robin
tournament. Salisbury notched a big conference win at York on Tuesday.
Lindsey Lawson led the Gulls with a season and
team-high 17 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Brittany Mister
chipped in with 16 kills. York College dropped their only match
of the week, as they fell to Salisbury University in a five-set
thriller in York. In the loss, the Spartans were led by
Kerry Casperson as she picked up the double-double with
17 kills and 15 digs while she also recorded six service aces and
five blocks. Carla Gray had 12 digs and nine kills
while Caitlin McIntosh had 66 assists. Gallaudet
face a tough week starting with a road match at Catholic. It will
be just the second match in ten days for the Bison as they have
played just once since returning from California. The Bison host
their annual tournament this weekend. St. Mary’s lost their
only match of the week, falling to Catholic 3-0 on Thursday. Senior
Carol Schmoeller led the Seahawks with ten kills
and five digs in the match. Marymount’s Mary Carroll
had 19 kills in the tough four-game loss to Gallaudet and then added
33 kills and 30 digs in four matches at the Sea Gull Classic in
Salisbury this weekend. The Saints finished second in the tournament
as they went 3-1.
Volleyball Notes for the Week: York
College won the JHU Invitational on Saturday as the Spartans defeated
host Blue Jays 3-2 in the championship match. Senior Kerry
Casperson banged out a team-high 63 digs in the Spartans
five matches this week. She also collected 13 service aces and 51digs
in 20 games for YCP. Setter Caitlin McIntosh dished
out 217 assists in 19 games as the Spartans went 4-1 for the week
including a CAC win at Marymount on Wednesday. Mary Washington defeated
Catholic on Wednesday, handing the Cardinals just their second CAC
regular season loss since 1999. Mary Washington won the consolation
final at the Johns Hopkins Tournament on Saturday. Catholic suffered
their first regular-season CAC loss since 2001 as they fell to Mary
Washington. Gettysburg won Saturday’s Guetle Invitational,
marking the first time in the five-year history of the tournament
that the Cardinals did not win. Salisbury won their only game of
the week as they blanked Goucher 3-0 on Wednesday. Suzanne
Powell had nine kills while Lindsay Lawson
added seven kills. Powell also had five service aces and 10 digs.
Kim Rementer had nine digs while Brittany
Mister had seven. Gallaudet traveled to California for
a tournament at CSU Hayward. The Bison played three teams ranked
in the top 15 and those teams lived up to their rankings as the
Bison managed to win just one of 13 games. Sophomore Jovin
Dinkel led the team with 37 kills in those four matches.
St. Mary’s won their opening match of the Elizabethtown tournament
against Montclair State but then lost their remaining three matches
of the tournament. The current three-game losing skid comes after
the Seahawks had won four of their previous five matches. Marymount’s
Gala Garcia had 16 kills in the conference loss
to YCP. Sophomore Kelly Seymour had 25 digs in
the match.
Volleyball Notes for the Week: Catholic
picked up their first CAC win of the season with a 3-0 victory over
Goucher on Tuesday. Freshman Whitney Dachelet led
the way with 12 kills. It was her fifth straight match with 10 or
more kills. YCP went 3-1 this week including their first CAC win
of the year, a 3-1 win over Gallaudet. Senior Kerry Casperson
had another solid week as she hit .333 with 54 kills in 13 games
played. Casperson also had a team-high 13 service aces, 38 digs,
and 10 blocks. Mary Washington swept Salisbury on the road in their
only match of the week in both teams’ CAC opener on Wednesday.
Gallaudet will play four matches in California this week at the
California State University-Hayward. Three of the opponents that
the Bison will face are currently ranked in the top 15 nationally.
Elmhurst, CSU-Hayward, and University of La Verne are on the slate
for the weekend. St. Mary’s won their lone match last week,
a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Marymount. Senior
setter Jeannie Long had a phenomenal match for
the Seahawks by tallying 32 assists, 18 digs, and ten kills in the
match. The annual Sea Gull Classic volleyball tournament was forced
into a three team round-robin, featuring Salisbury, Johns Hopkins,
and Richard Stockton, due to the effects of Hurricane Isabel. Frostburg
State and Catholic opted out of the tournament.
Volleyball Notes for the Week: Gallaudet
is two games over .500 for the first time since the 2001 season,
despite playing without senior starter Nicole Snell,
who has a foot injury. The Bison are once again getting big contributions
from first-year players as Charity Sanders is third
on the team in kills while Kristina Burke is first
on the team in digs. Catholic University captured its second tournament
title in as many weeks as the Cardinals defeated the host Richard
Stockton in five games to win the 2003 Osprey Classic. Senior Anji
Wall was named the MVP of the one-day tournament while
senior Kathleen McGlynn was named to the all-tournament
team. Salisbury finished tied for third at the nine-team ASICS Maryland
State Division III Tournament. Salisbury advanced to the semifinals
before falling to eventual champion Frostburg State on Saturday.
The Sea Gulls finished round-robin play 3-1 with wins over Villa
Julie, Washington, and St. Mary’s. Earlier in the week, Salisbury
had only five attack errors and hit .338 as a team to beat the College
of Notre Dame in three games. Sophomore Brittany Mister
paced the Salisbury offense with 10 kills and a .429 attack
percentage. Freshman Abbey Petrecca added six kills
and 21 assists. The Sea Gulls also tied a school-record with 22
service aces, led by six from sophomore Alicia Knowles.
York’s senior Kerry Casperson reached the
1,000 career kill plateau in the match against Messiah on Saturday.
Casperson had a great day on Saturday as she finished with 33 kills,
21 digs, 10 assists, six aces, and three blocks in two matches (seven
games). Casperson is just the second player in the last eight years
to reach the 1,000 kill career mark at YCP. Mary Washington avenged
its season-opening loss to Bridgewater with a 3-1 win over the Eagles
on Tuesday. Lauren Eigel led MWC with 16 kills
and 21 digs in the match. Marymount University took third place
at the Bridgewater College Tournament, going 2-2. Senior
Mary Carroll was named to the All-Tournament team. Goucher
secured its first win of the season when it prevailed in the decisive
fifth game of a match against Hood, 15-9, at the ASICS Maryland
State Division III Tournament. Kim Thompson supplied
the Gophers with 16 kills in the five-game victory over the Blazers.
St. Mary’s dropped their conference opener at Gallaudet on
Tuesday before finishing 2-2 at the inaugural ASICS Maryland State
Division III tournament held at Johns Hopkins University. The two
wins for SMC at the tournament were their first two wins of the
season.
Volleyball Notes for the Week: After
dropping their season opener, Catholic has picked up steam in winning
eight in a row. Included in that win streak was the championship
of the Buttermaker Tournament at Muhlenberg College. Senior Kathleen
McGlynn was named to the all-tournament team at the F &M
Scramble and the Buttermaker Tournament. At the Gettysburg Tournament,
Salisbury dropped their opening two matches on Friday night by scores
of 3-0 and 3-1. The Sea Gulls then rebounded to win all three of
their matches on Saturday to win the tournament’s silver bracket.
York finished second in the blue bracket at the Gettysburg Tournament
this past weekend. The Spartans were led by the senior tandem of
Kerry Casperson and Carla Gray.
For the week, Casperson had 59 kills while hitting . 323 in 18 games,
she also recorded 63 digs and seven service aces. Gray contributed
63 digs, seven service aces, and averaged 2.2 kills in 23 games.
Brandy Overlander hit .311 for the week with 74
kills in 23 games which was a team-high while Caitlin McIntosh
had 253 assists in 23 games for the Spartans. St. Mary’s was
idle for the last week, they will turn to action this week when
they open their CAC schedule at Gallaudet and then travel to the
Maryland State D-III tournament at Johns Hopkins this weekend.
Mary Washington's Kathryn Feldman was
named to the all tournament team at CNU. When Gallaudet recorded
their 3-0 win over Messiah, head coach Patrick O’Brien
picked up the 100th win of his career. Raylene Lotz
was named to the all-tournament team at the Moravian Tournament.
