Women’s Basketball Notes for the Week (2/23/04):
Marymount had six players in double figures as they defeated Gallaudet
to secure the top seed in the CAC tournament. They were led by Randi
Jones who had 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists,
and two steals. The Saints were ranked #1 in the NCAA region poll,
#12 in the WBCA/USA Today poll and #19 in the D3hoops.com poll.
Catholic finished tied for first place in the CAC regular season
for the first time in the program’s history as they tied Marymount
11-3 atop the CAC standings. Catholic won three games this week
and have now won five straight. Freshman Shannon Mertz
scored a team-high 20 points and Jackie DeBorger
chipped in with eight points, nine assists, and nine rebounds as
the Cardinals held off a late York College charge for a 89-88 win
on Wednesday. Against Albright on Thursday, senior Kathleen
McGlynn notched her fifth double-double for the season
as she had 24 points 13 rebounds. She then followed that up with
a season-high 27 points in the win over Goucher on Senior Day. Freshman
Maria Rojas added 17 points, also a season-high
with five steals and four assists. York College split their two
games this week as they fell to Catholic before going on the road
to down St. Mary’s. Against Catholic, the Spartans trailed
by as many as 27 points before staging a furious second half comeback
that saw the green an white score 64 points but also saw them fall
one point short on the scoreboard. For the week, junior Heather
Kessler led the Spartans as she averaged 23.5 points, 4.0
rebounds, 7.5 assists, and 2.0 steals per game in the green and
white’s two contests. Kessler shot 60% from the floor, 55.6%
from downtown and 92.3% from the charity stripe. Goucher’s
Kate Guggino recorded 13 points and 14 rebounds
against Mary Washington on Wednesday to become the Gophers’
second-leading all-time leading scorer and just the second player
to surpass 800 career rebounds in the history of the Gopher women’s
basketball program. The senior forward achieved her 13th double-double
of the season against Catholic and enters the CAC championship tournament
with 1,543 career points and 815 career rebounds. Mary Washington
closed the regular season with a split of the games to finish the
regular season with a 12-12 mark, the first time they’ve been
at .500 or better since the 1999-2000 season. Sophomore Lindsey
Forbush scored a career-high 27 points and added 13 rebounds
as the Eagles topped Salisbury on the road in the season finale.
Salisbury split their two games this week as they upset Marymount
on Wednesday before falling to Mary Washington in overtime on Saturday.
Against MU, Christen Barney tied a school record
with 14 free throws made (in 16 attempts) in the 75-66 win. Barney
finished the contest with a game-high 23 points. Kiera Watkins added
20 points and 10 rebounds while Jessica Mills dropped
in 11 points and collected eight rebounds. Against MWC, Courtney
Kendall led a balanced Salisbury offense with 12 points.
Watkins and Julia Water each added 10 points to the Sea Gull offense.
St. Mary’s split their two conference games this week. Junior
guard Amanda Polidoro led the Seahawks for the
week by averaging 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per
game. The Seahawks are the seventh seed in the upcoming CAC tournament
and travel to Catholic on Tuesday.
Women’s Basketball Notes for the Week
(2/17/04): Marymount won their 20th game of the season.
It is head coach Bill Finney’s 12th season
and fourth in a row with at least 20 wins. Junior Adele
Magnani sparked the Saints off the bench in both games
for the week. She averaged 12 points per game as she shot 11-for-13
from the field including 5-for-5 against YCP. Magnani also pulled
down 5.5 rebounds per game, had two blocks and had only two turnovers
in 36 minutes of action. The Saints were ranked #1 in the NCAA regional
poll, #15 in the WBCA/USA Today poll and #21 in the D3hoops.com
poll. Catholic set a new school mark for CAC wins in a season with
their ninth league win on Saturday. The Cardinals’ 17 wins
overall ties a school mark that was established in 1977-78. In Saturday’s
win over St. Mary’s, Kathleen McGlynn poured
in a team-high 19 points and pulled down eight boards. The senior
also dished out a career-best five assists. Sophomore Anne
Maguire chipped in with 12 points on four three-point field
goals. In Wednesday’s win over Mary Washington, Shannon
Mertz scored 14 points and sophomore Gloria Schnepp
added 13 points and six rebounds. Goucher’s Kate Guggino
tallied a game-high 21 points including the 1,500th point of her
career in leading the Gophers to a convincing 87-68 win over Salisbury.
She is just the third female in school history to attain the milestone
of 1,500 career points and needs only two more points to pass Didi
Cotton to become the programs’ second-leading all-time scorer.
Since losing to Marymount on January 31, the Gophers have strung
together four consecutive wins for their longest win streak since
the eight in a row they won during the 1995-96 season. York head
coach Betsy Witman earned her 100th career game
on Monday against Elizabethtown as the Spartans defeated the Blue
Jays 68-64. Witman is in her seventh season at YCP and is the second-winningest
coach in Spartan women’s basketball history. Mary Washington
had its three-game win streak snapped on Wednesday at Catholic.
The Eagles bounced back to down Gallaudet on Saturday. Sophomore
Jenn Olinger scored team highs of 14 and 15 points
in this week’s games while freshman Debbie Bruen
added 12 and 13 points respectively while grabbing nine boards in
each game. Salisbury recorded its highest point total of the season
on Wednesday as they defeated Gallaudet 104-40 at home before going
on the road and falling to Goucher on Saturday. Against Gallaudet,
Julia Waters notched 20 points and a game-high nine boards.
Stephanie Szkaradnik added 15 points and eight
boards while Christen Barney and Megan
Dowdy each added 11 points. In the loss to Goucher, Waters
paced the Gulls with 15 points and 10 boards. Kiera Watkins
dumped in 14 points and pulled in 13 rebounds.St. Mary’s lost
both of their contests this past week. Senior forward Mary
Kate Lenz led the Seahawks in two of the contests with
36 points and 13 rebounds including her first double-double of the
season against Marymount with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Women’s Basketball Notes for the Week
(2/9/04): Marymount responded to a CAC loss to Mary Washington
on Wednesday with a win over Catholic on Sunday. The Saints built
a 47-21 halftime lead and outrebounded the Cardinals 56-37. Annetta
Benjamin had her fifth double-double of the season with
17 points and 12 rebounds against Catholic. Katie Jarvis
moved into fourth place for all-time rebounding with 830. With two
more caroms, she moves into third place in MU history. Freshman
Kacee Grogan scored a career-high 12 points against
Mary Washington. The Saints were ranked #1 in the NCAA regional
poll, #9 in the WBCA/USA Today poll and #12 in the D3hoops.com poll.
Catholic broke a 20-game losing streak to Salisbury with Wednesday’s
61-42 win over the Gulls. Senior Kathleen McGlynn
had a game-high 14 points and 12 rebounds in the victory. Sophomore
Gloria Schnepp added 12 points and nine rebounds.
It was the first Catholic win over Salisbury since a 66-64 win during
the 1993-94 season. Against Marymount on Saturday, Schnepp posted
10 points and six rebounds while sophomore Lindsay DiRomualdo
chipped in with 14 points. York senior Mandy Crabbs
became York’s all-time leading rebounder on Wednesday night
with her ninth carom of the game. Crabbs broke Betsy Roberts’
career record of 970 and now has 975 rebounds. Crabbs is now 25
rebounds short of becoming the first player in school history to
score 1,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds. On Wednesday night at
Gallaudet, junior Heather Kessler established a
new career-high with 29 points as she was 10-for-14 from the field
including 6-of-8 from beyond the arc. Kessler also nailed all three
of her attempts from the free throw line while she dished out four
assists with no turnovers in just 26 minutes of work. Against Salisbury
on Saturday, sophomore Heidi Miller poured in a
career-high 26 points while she also had a career-high tying seven
rebounds and four assists. Mary Washington won three straight games
this week and they have won four of their last seven. The Eagles
snapped a 12-game losing streak to Marymount with a 59-51 win over
the 12th ranked Saints on Wednesday night. Lindsey Forbush scored
18 points and freshman Debbie Bruen scored 14 points
and added 15 rebounds in the win. For the week, Bruen, who is the
Eagles’ leading scorer at 12.0 ppg, averaged a double-double
for the week as she averaged 13 points and 11.3 rebounds per game
in the Eagles’ three wins. The Eagles have four players averaging
between 12.0 and 10.4 points per game. Goucher’s Stephanie
Tolbert became the seventh player in the history of the
Gophers’ women’s basketball program to score 1,000 points
in her career as she reached that milestone during the Gophers’
87-44 win over Gallaudet on Saturday. The senior guard missed a
triple-double in that game by just one rebound as she tallied 25
points, grabbed nine rebounds, and recorded 11 steals. Senior Kate
Guggino, who suprassed 1,000 career points last season
as a junior, moved past Betsy Weingarten (1985-88) into third place
in career points at Goucher with a 27-point performance in the Gophers’
56-47 win over St. Mary’s. The senior forward is 31 points
away from 1,500 for her career. Salisbury went 1-1 for the week
in a tale of two games. Against Catholic, Salisbury converted 28.3%
of their attempts from the field while against York on Saturday,
Salisbury made 46.2% of their shots from the field including 12-of-24
from beyond the arc. Against Catholic, Gen Olds
led Salisbury with nine points while Kiera Watkins
and Megan Klug added six points each. In the win
over the Spartans, Christen Barney added 23 points and seven boards
while Olds added 17 points and a game-high seven assists. Olds was
5-for-10 from beyond the arc for the Gulls. St. Mary’s forward
Mary Kate Lenz averaged 17 points and seven rebounds
for the Seahawks in their two losses last week. Against Goucher,
Lenz recorded team-highs with 21 points and nine rebounds. She followed
up that performance with 13 points and five rebounds against Mary
Washington.
Women’s Basketball Notes for the Week
(2/3/04): Marymount has won six games in a row. Marymount’s
three captains, two seniors and a fifth-year senior, all averaged
double figures for the week. Annetta Benjamin averaged
16 points per game along with 11.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks, and two
steals in a pair of CAC wins. Katie Jarvis averaged
14 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.0 blocks per game for
the week. Ashlee Courter hit for 13.5 points, 3.5
rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per game in the two games.
The Saints are currently ranked 11th in the WBCA/USA Today poll
and #12 in the D3hoops.com poll. Catholic ended a five-game losing
streak to York on Wednesday as Cardinal head coach Maggie
Lonergan earned her first victory over the Spartans. Senior
Kathleen McGlynn tied a career-high with 23 points
and sophomore Lindsay DiRomuldo added 21. Sophomore
Jane Maybury netted a career-best 13 points in
the win over Gallaudet. Catholic capped off the week with a 100-52
victory at Trinity (DC). It was the first time since the 1990-91
season that the Cardinals hit the century mark in a game. York split
their two games this week as they fell from the first place tie
with Marymount. Junior Heather Kessler continues
to do it all for YCP as she averaged 15.0 points, 6.5 assists, 3.5
rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game for the two games during the week.
She established a new career-high with 10 assists in Saturday’s
win over Mary Washington. Senior Mandy Crabbs pulled
down 15 rebounds on Saturday as she has led the Spartans in rebounding
in 12 of YCP’s 17 games this year. Crabbs now needs 10 rebounds
to become York’s all-time leading rebounder while she needs
39 rebounds to become the first player in YCP history to score 1,000
career points and grab 1,000 career rebounds. Salisbury split their
two games this week, falling to Marymount 67-59 on Wednesday before
bouncing back to down St. Mary’s 82-74 in overtime on Saturday.
Christen Barney paced the Sea Gulls with 16 points and
freshman guard Jenna Peters scored 10 points. Sophomore guard Cyndi
Benjamin added a season-high eight points off the bench.
Against St. Mary’s, Barney tallied 19 points including a pair
of free throws with five seconds remaining in regulation to force
overtime. Sophomore Kiera Watkins added 17 points
for SU while Gen Olds finished with 13 points.
Benjamin added eight points to the Sea Gulls attack. Mary Washington
saw its four-game win streak come to a halt on Saturday in York.
The Eagles toppled Goucher on the road on Wednesday before falling
to York on Saturday. Freshman Debbie Bruen led
four Eagles in double figures with 16 points and also grabbed 13
rebounds against Goucher. Goucher’s Stephanie Tolbert
was held to eight points in the Gophers’ 63-46 loss to Marymount.
Its the first time all season that she has scored fewer than 13
points in a game and ended her streak of 21 consecutive games reaching
double figures dating back to last season. St. Mary’s split
their two games this past week, defeating Gallaudet at home and
losing to Salisbury in overtime on the road. The win against Gallaudet
ended a five-game losing streak. The past two games were also the
highest scoring games for the Seahawks offensively this season.
Senior forward Mary Kate Lenz scored a career-high
32 points in the overtime loss to Salisbury.
Women’s Basketball Notes for the Week
(1/27/04): Marymount won all four of their games for the
week. Senior Katie Jarvis reached two milestones
this past week. She went over 1,200 career points and is now ninth
on MU’s all-time scoring list. She also went over 800 rebounds
and is sixth all-time on that list. Marymount had a season-high
nine blocked shots against Hood with Annetta Benjamin
collecting five in the game. The Saints’ Ashlee Courter,
with 11 points in the win over Hood on Sunday, reached 1,200 career
points. She is now 11th on the Saints’ all-time scoring list.
York split their two games for the week as they fell into a first-place
tie with Marymount. The Spartans were led by junior Heather
Kessler as the guard averaged 16 points, 4.5 rebounds,
8.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game in the two contests for the
week. Three other Spartans averaged double figures for the week
as Jess Kemp (13.5 ppg), Kirstin Brown
(11.5 ppg), and Mandy Crabbs (11.0 ppg) each averaged
double figures in scoring. Crabbs pulled down 9.5 boards per game
for the week while Ashley Robertson contributed
9.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game for the week. Kessler was named
to the D3hoops.com team of the week for the week of January 11-17,
2004. It was her second appearance on the national team of the week
for this season. Catholic had their eight game winning streak snapped
at Goucher on Saturday as the Gophers used a last-second shot in
overtime to down the Cardinals 76-74. CUA was one win shy of tying
the longest win streak in the program’s history. Senior Kathleen
McGlynn had another stellar week, scoring 36 points and
grabbing 22 rebounds in two games this week. She now leads the team
in scoring (11.9 ppg) and rebounding (7.3 rpg). The Cardinals’
11-4 start is the best mark to start a season since the 1987-88
team began the season 12-3. Goucher ended a 17-game losing streak
to Salisbury with a 71-68 win on Wednesday. The Gophers then defeated
Catholic 76-74 in overtime for their first three-game CAC win streak
since 1995-96 season. Stephanie Tolbert, who tallied
51 points in the two wins, has now been the leading scorer for Goucher
in seven straight games. Salisbury went 1-2 in a busy week. The
Gulls began the week with a 78-69 win at Richard Stockton before
dropping a pair of CAC contests against Goucher and Mary Washington.
Against Stockton, Jessica Mills and Christen Barney
each scored 15 points in the win while Julia Waters
added 12 points and 14 rebounds. Kiera Watkins
and Jenna Peters added 10 points each. Against
Goucher, Watkins led the Sea Gulls with a career-high 31 points
and also collected a game-high 13 rebounds. Barney added 16 points
for Salisbury. On Saturday, Watkins led Salisbury with 16 points
while Gen Olds added eight and Barney had seven.
Watkins was also the leading rebounder in the game with seven. Mary
Washington improved to .500 in league play with a pair of wins this
week as they downed Gallaudet and Salisbury. Sophomore Lindsey
Forbush led five Eagles in double figures with 10 points
and a career-high 20 rebounds, as MWC downed Salisbury for the first
time in eight meetings. Debbie Bruen recorded a
double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. St. Mary’s lost
all three of their contests this past week and have now lost five
straight overall. The Seahawks will look to end their losing streak
at home on Wednesday against Gallaudet. Senior guard Megan
Baskins leads the team in scoring (18.1 ppg) and steals
with 37. Despite dropping three games this week, there was one highlight
for Gallaudet this past week. Sophomore Charity Sanders
scored 30 points for the Bison in a loss at Marymount, the first
time in more than two years that a Gallaudet player reached 30 points
in a game. She averaged 18.0 points per game for the week and 6.7
rebounds per contest, both team highs.
Women’s Basketball Notes for the Week
(1/20/04): York won both of their contests this week with
senior Mandy Crabbs reaching the 1,000 career point
milestone in the win over Goucher on Wednesday. Crabbs is the eighth
Spartan women’s basketball player to reach the milestone.
For the week, junior Heather Kessler was outstanding
as she averaged 25.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.5 steals
in the two Spartan wins for the week. Kessler established a new
career-high with 28 points in the win over Goucher in which the
Spartans scored 61 second half points after trailing by 15 at the
half. Crabbs was also outstanding in the two wins as she averaged
19.0 points, 15.0 rebounds, 5.0 steals, 1.5 blocks, and 1.0 assists
per game for the week. Junior Ashley Robertson
had a strong week as she averaged 14.0 points and 10.5 rebounds
per game. Catholic pulled off their second upset in as many weeks,
defeating 9th ranked Marymount on Saturday, 66-56. The Cardinals
then extended their winning streak to seven with an 84-63 win over
Hood on Sunday. CUA is off to its best start since the 2000-01 season.
Freshman Maria Rojas scored 14 points and added
two rebounds and three assists in the upset win over Marymount.
Salisbury went 1-2 for the week as they sandwiched a win over Gallaudet
between losses to College of New Jersey and York. Against TCNJ,
Gen Olds had 16 points and four boards while Julia
Waters notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.
Christen Barney chipped in with 13 points. Salisbury
recorded their most convincing win of the year on Wednesday as they
defeated Gallaudet. Barney had 16 points and dished out six assists
while Megan Klug scored 14 points and pulled in
five boards. Olds chipped in with 11 points. In the loss to York,
the Sea Gulls were outscored 12-8 in the overtime as all five Sea
Gull starters reached double figures. Kiera Watkins
had 16 points and pulled in 10 rebounds while Waters finished with
14 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman Courtney Kendall was
the third Sea Gull with a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Goucher’s Stephanie Tolbert was the leading
scorer for Goucher in all three of the Gophers’ games last
week. She totaled 58 points for the week, raising her average this
season to 18.8 points per game. Kate Guggino grabbed
the 700th rebound of her career at Goucher during the Gophers’
77-45 win over Gallaudet, making her only the second female in school
history to reach that milestone. St. Mary’s lost their lone
contest at home this past week as MWC defeated the Seahawks. Senior
forward Mary Kate Lenz led the Seahawks with 16
points and seven rebounds in the contest. Mary Washington split
its two games this week, dropping an eight point loss to Catholic
before picking up its first CAC win, a 71-61 decision at St. Mary’s.
In that game, junior Laura Hanks scored a career-high
28 points and she also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Gallaudet
earned their second win of the season behind a basket from Charity
Sanders in the final seconds against Villa Julie. Sanders has led
the Bison all season in points and rebounds as she is averaging
11.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.
Women’s Basketball Notes for the Week
(1/13/04): Marymount has won four straight with their win
over College of New Jersey. The Saints are ranked 10th in the D3hoops.com
poll and #15 in the USAToday/WBCA poll. Senior Annetta Benjamin
had 16 points and nine rebounds against TCNJ. Marymount held the
Lion’s top scorer, Liz Martin, to just one point in the game.
York College went 0-2 this past week, falling to McDaniel 66-55
on Friday and to Rowan 91-82 on Sunday. Against Rowan, senior Mandy
Crabbs tallied a career-high 30 points in addition to collecting
11 rebounds for her seventh double-double in 11 games this season.
Crabbs needs five points to join the 1,000 career point club at
YCP. Salisbury has gotten off to a fast start in 2004. The Sea Gulls
went 2-1 this week and began the week with a 75-59 non-conference
win over Rowan on Tuesday. Forward Megan Dowdy
tallied 11 points while Jessica Mills and Jenna
Peters each added 10 points to the Sea Gull offense. Salisbury
then split a pair of weekend games at the King’s Tournament.
On Friday, Kiera Watkins scored 18 points and had
eight rebounds in an 80-75 loss to Kean. Christen Barney
added 14 points and Courtney Kendall added 13 points.
On Saturday, Barney scored 16 points and Watkins and Julia
Waters each added 13 points. Dowdy chipped in with 12 points
and Mills rounded out the Gulls double figures scorers with 11 in
Salisbury’s 98-75 win over Neumann. Watkins was named to the
All-Tournament team. Catholic capped off a 2-0 week by defeating
previously unbeaten Montclair State 77-68 on Friday night. Senior
Kathleen McGlynn and Lindsay DiRomualdo
netted 17 points each to lead the Cardinals to their fourth straight
victory. DiRomualdo scored 13 points and added five rebounds, five
steals, and four assists in the win over Susquehanna. Freshman
Jackie DeBorger averaged 13 points in two games this week,
scoring 10 points in the win at Susquehanna and adding 16 points
against Montclair. St. Mary’s went 2-1 this past week, winning
both road contests before falling at home to Montclair State on
Saturday. The Seahawks are now 4-1 on the road this season. Goucher
topped the 100-point mark for the first time since the 1993-94 season
as Stephanie Tolbert and Kate Guggino
combined for 60 points in a 103-75 win over Delaware Valley. Tolbert
finished with a career-high 34 points and Guggino had 26 before
fouling out with 4:30 remaining. Together, the two players were
a combined 23-for-46 form the field and a perfect 14-for-14 at the
free throw line. As a team, the Gophers tied the single-game school
record for free throw percentage by converting 21-of-24 from the
charity stripe. Mary Washington downed Villa Julie 72-26 in their
only game this week. Junior Laura Hanks led MWC
with 23 points including six three-point field goals. Debbie
Bruen added 18 points and eight rebounds in just 18 minutes.
Gallaudet won their first game of the season with a dominating 56-point
win over CalTech. Gallaudet tied a 23-year-old school record for
steals with 32 in the contest.
Women’s Basketball Notes for the Week:
Marymount has now won three in a row following their first loss
of the season to Kean, defeating those three teams by an average
of 29 points per game. All four games were on the road. Marymount
hit a season-high 10 three pointers against University of the Virgin
Islands. Annetta Benjamin was named to the All-Tournament
team at the SCAD Tournament. In the four games, she averaged 13
points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.8 steals per game. York
had their six game win streak snapped when they fell to Lebanon
Valley 76-72 in overtime in Saturday’s championship game of
the Rinso Marquette Tournament in Annville. The Spartans’
two losses have both come to the Flying Dutchmen in tournament championship
games. The Spartans advanced to the championship game thanks to
Mandy Crabbs as the senior had 19 points, 10 rebounds,
and four steals in the semifinal win over Lycoming. Junior Ashley
Robertson added 16 points and five rebounds while Heather
Kessler had 15 points, six rebounds, six steals, and four
assists. In the championship game loss, Kessler was outstanding
as the junior guard had 23 points and four assists in 43 minutes
despite battling an illness. Sophomore Heidi Miller
added a season-high 14 points while Kirstin Brown
and Jess Kemp each added 10 points. Crabbs pulled
down 10 rebounds in addition to scoring seven points and collecting

honors. St. Mary’s split their two games in the Virgin Islands
over the holiday break. The Seahawks defeated UVI and then lost
to conference foe Marymount. Goucher’s Kate Guggino
pulled down a career-high 20 rebounds in the Gophers’ 58-45
loss to Christopher Newport. Mary Washington freshman Debbie
Bruen was named to the Rinso Marquette Tournament All-Tournament
Team, thanks to a 12-point, seven-rebound performance against LVC
and a 14-point, seven-rebound day against Lycoming College. Lindsey
Forbush recorded her third double-double in four games wiht 19 points
and 10 rebounds against Lycoming on Saturday.
Women’s Basketball Notes for the Week:
Marymount won their 12th game in a row against a New Jersey Athletic
Conference (NJAC) opponent, dating back to the 2000-01 season. Katie
Jarvis had her second double-double in a row as she had
18 points and 13 rebounds in the win over Richard Stockton. The
Saints are ranked sixth in the D3hoops.com poll. York ended their
10-game losing streak against Messiah as the Spartans handed the
tenth-ranked Falcons a 74-63 loss. The Spartan received a game-high
18 points from freshman Jessica Kemp. Senior Mandy
Crabbs added 16 points and nine rebounds while Heather
Kessler added 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Kessler was named to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week for the week
of December 1-7. She is the first women’s basketball player
in Spartan history to earn the weekly honor. Salisbury’s Kiera
Watkins scored 22 points and added nine rebounds as Salisbury
defeated St. Mary’s 78-54 on Friday. Watkins was 12-for-15
from the free throw line. Sophomore Christen Barney
added 19 points, while sophomore Cyndi Benjamin and freshman Julia
Waters each contributed 10 markers. The win lifts the Sea
Gulls into a first-place tie in the CAC with Marymount and York
as all three teams are 2-0 in the league. Salisbury started the
week with an 80-71 loss to Hood. Watkins had 16 points and 12 rebounds
while Barney tallied 14 points in the loss. Courtney Kendall
added 10 points while Jessica Mills had 13 points. Catholic surrendered
the fewest points since the 1999-2000 season in an easy 61-35 win
over North Park University on Sunday. Freshman Jackie DeBorger
scored 14 points and rookie Shannon Mertz chipped
in with 13 points as the Cardinals saw North Park shoot a dismal
2-of-28 from the floor in the first half. The Cardinals allowed
just 31 points to Albright in the 41-31 win in the 1999-2000 season
opener. St. Mary’s dropped a pair of games this past week,
falling on the road to Hood 79-61 and at home to CAC foe Salisbury
78-54. The Seahawks are off until they participate in the University
of the Virgin Islands Sunsational Tournament from December 31-January
3. The Seahawks will face Marymount University in the second game
of the tournament and that game will count as the Seahawks’
home contest against the Saints for 2003-04. Goucher established
a new Sports & Recreation Center record for assists in a game
with 27 in the 84-69 win over Neumann. Stephanie Tolbert
became only the third individual in school history with at least
10 assists in a game as she had 19 points and dished out 10 assists
in the win over the Knights. Stacy Hollander added
14 points and a career-high nine assists. Kate Guggino
boosted her scoring average this season to 23.0 ppg with a pair
of 28-point performances in the Gophers’ two wins last week.
Women’s Basketball Notes for the Week:
Marymount opened their CAC season with a pair of wins. In six games,
the Saints have had seven different players lead the squad in scoring.
Marymount is ranked seventh in the latest D3Hoops.com poll. York
College established a trio of school records in their 118-66 win
over Gallaudet. The 118 points establish a new single-game scoring
record breaking the old mark of 114 that was set in 1992-93 against
St. Mary’s. The Spartans also drained a record 17 three-point
field goals in the contest as YCP was 17-for-26 from beyond the
arc. Senior Kirstin Brown set a new school mark
with eight threes in the contest as she scored a career-high 26
points. The Spartans have won four straight including a perfect
3-0 week last week. Junior Heather Kessler had
a great week as she averaged 20.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 5.6
assists for the week. Kessler shot 50% (19-38) from the field, 53.3%
(8-15) from three, and 94.1% (16-17) from the free throw line. Freshman
Jessica Kemp also played well during the week as she averaged
20.7 points per game. Senior Mandy Crabbs led the
Spartans on the boards for the week as she averaged 11.7 caroms
per game while she scored 17 points per game including a career-high
24 points in the win over Gallaudet. Salisbury defeated Apprentice
in the championship game of the Optimist Gull Classic on Saturday,
78-66. Christen Barney hit 7-of-14 from the field
for 18 points while she added five rebounds. Julia Waters
scored eight points and grabbed 11 rebounds as she was named the
tournament MVP. Jessica Mills and Megan Krug each added 10 points
in the win. Barney and Kiera Watkins earned All-Tournament
team honors. Earlier in the week, Waters hit a 15-foot jumper with
three seconds left to lift Salisbury to a 70-69 victory over Catholic
in the CAC opener for both teams. Waters converted the game-winner
in transition after the Sea Gulls rebounded a missed CUA free throw
with nine seconds left. Watkins notched the double-double in the
win with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Waters finished with 15 points
and Gen Olds added 13 points including four treys.
St. Mary’s split their two games this past week, picking up
their first CAC win of the season on the road at Goucher before
falling at home to Washington & Lee in non-conference action.
Senior guard Megan Baskins leads the team in scoring
with a 22.6 points per game average and has connected on 42.2% (19-45)
of her three-point field goal attempts this season. Catholic rebounded
from a tough loss to Salisbury by defeating Gallaudet 78-34 on Saturday
to earn their first CAC win of the year. Sophomore Lindsay
DiRomualdo registered a game-high 20 points on 9-of-16
shooting from the floor while she also had four rebounds, two blocks
and three steals. As a team, Catholic pulled down 70 rebounds against
the Bison which is the third-best total in school history. Senior
Kathleen McGlynn notched her first double-double
of the year at Salisbury, scoring 16 points and hauling in 10 boards.
Goucher’s Kate Guggino achieved her third
and fourth double-doubles of the young season by scoring 22 points
and grabbing 18 rebounds against St. Mary’s, and knocking
down 22 points and collecting 11 boards against Notre Dame. Against
Marymount, the 5-11 senior forward was limited to 11 points and
eight rebounds. Mary Washington freshman forward Debbie
Bruen recorded her first collegiate double-double with
10 points and 10 rebounds at Marymount on Wednesday. She followed
that with 12 points in the loss to York on Friday. After six games,
Gallaudet’s average margin of defeat is 45.3 points per game
as the Bison have been held to fewer than 35 points on three occasions.
The Bison have off until they play three games in four days in California
on January 2-5.
Women’s Basketball Notes for the Week:
Marymount ran their record to 4-0, their best start since 1998-99.
Marymount has seven players with at least seven points or more in
the win over Christopher Newport. Marymount is ranked ninth in the
latest D3Hoops.com poll. Kate Guggino and Stephanie
Tolbert combined for 50 points in leading Goucher past
Lynchburg 80-71. Guggino completed her second double-double of the
young season by scoring 29 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. In addition
to scoring 21 points, Tolbert dished out a career-high nine assists
to become only the seventh individual in the history of Goucher’s
women’s program with at least nine assists in a game. York
College cruised to an 85-55 win over Villa Julie in their lone contest
of the week. Senior Mandy Crabbs picked up her
third double-double in as many games as she had 12 points and 15
rebounds while she also had seven steals and a career-high five
blocked shots. Junior Heather Kessler poured in
a game-high 25 points while she added six assists and four steals.
Freshman Jess Kemp added a career-high 18 points
while she also collected five rebounds, dished out five assists,
and swiped four steals. Catholic’s Kathleen McGlynn
netted 22 points and freshman Jackie DeBorger scored
16 points and added six rebounds, four assists, and two steals to
lead CUA to a 94-70 win over Arcadia on Tuesday. DeBorger then added
16 points and four caroms against Scranton as the eighth ranked
Royals snapped Catholic’s two-game win streak with a 75-63
win on Saturday. Salisbury rallied from a 14-point deficit to defeat
Christopher Newport 77-73 on Tuesday. Four Gulls reached double
figures including sophomore Christen Barney with
a team-high 17 points. Gen Olds and Megan
Dowdy each added 12 points. Megan Klug contributed 10 points.
The win improves the Gulls to 2-2 on the season. Mary Washington
sophomore Lindsey Forbush led the Eagles with 12
points off the bench in their 88-61 loss at Frostburg on Tuesday.
St. Mary’s lost their lone game this week, falling to Rowan
79-69. Senior Megan Baskins scored a career-high
34 points in the loss. Baskins leads the team in scoring with a
23.7 ppg average and has connected on 41.4 percent (12-29) of her
3-point attempts for the season. Gallaudet fell in the opening round
of its Holiday Tournament to undefeated Montclair State which went
on to win the tournament title. Junior Jovin Dinkel
was named to the All-Tournament team.
Women’s Basketball Notes for the Week:
Marymount won their opening tip-off for the eighth time in 16 tournaments.
In the semifinals and championship games, the Saints defeated teams
that had been to the Final Four in the last three years-Ohio Wesleyan
in the semis (a 2001 Final Four participant) and St. Lawrence (2002)
in the championship game. Annetta Benjamin, who
scored the first 11 points of the championship game, was named the
tournament MVP. Ashlee Courter and Katie
Jarvis were named to the All-Tournament team. The opening
day win was the Saints’ 17th straight season opening win.
Catholic sophomore Gloria Schnepp was named to
the 2003 Swarthmore Tip-Off All-Tournament team. She netted a career-high
22 points and added eight rebounds in the consolation win over Curry
College. Freshman Maria Rojas totaled 10 points
against Swarthmore and scored 13 points and chipped in four assists
against Curry. Goucher’s Kate Guggino erupted
for a career-high 33 points in leading the Gophers to a 79-66 win
over Christopher Newport in the opening round of the Coca-Cola Tip-Off
Classic in Ashland, VA. The fourth-team preseason All-American selection
by D3hoops.com added 11 points against Wisconsin-Platteville and
was the Gophers’ lone representative on the all-tournament
team. York College finished second at the Franklin & Marshall
Invitational as the Spartans defeated the host Diplomats 78-73 before
losing to Lebanon Valley College 86-77 in the championship game.
Junior Heather Kessler earned All-Tournament team
honors as she had 26 points and four rebounds against F&M and
she recorded 12 points, six rebounds, and six assists in the loss
to LVC. Senior Mandy Crabbs was also outstanding
for the tournament as she had a pair of double-doubles. Crabbs had
21 points and a team-high 13 rebounds, and a team-high three steals
for YCP against F&M. She followed that with 17-point, 18-rebound
performance in the championship tilt. Crabbs also added four steals
in 36 minutes of action. Salisbury finished 1-2 at the Marymount
Tip-Off Classic this weekend. Salisbury lost to St. Lawrence 71-60
on Friday and 87-78 to Kings on Saturday before bouncing back and
defeating Elizabethtown 77-69 on Sunday. Kiera Watkins
led the Gulls in the first two contests as she had 11 points and
seven rebounds against St. Lawrence and she added 23 points and
12 rebounds against Kings. Against Elizabethtown, Watkins had 15
points and four rebounds as she was 9-for-10 from the free throw
line. Christen Barney added 10 points while Courtney
Kendall added nine points and 10 rebounds. Gallaudet faced an All-American
in its opener as Angel Hall of Anderson personally
outscored the Bison 36-33. Sophomore Charity Sanders was a bright
spot with 13 rebounds in her first collegiate game. Sophomore Amanda
Burnham of Mary Washington was named to the Scotty Wood
All-Tournament team as she grabbed ten rebounds in each of MWC’s
season-opening games against Muhlenberg and Gwynedd-Mercy. Senior
Adrienne Barnes scored 24 points in the opener against Muhlenberg.
St. Mary’s lost their first two games of the season at the
Rowan Invitational. Senior guard Megan Baskins is leading the team
in scoring with an 18.5 ppg average.
