CAC Women's Lacrosse News and Notes:

Women’s Lacrosse Notes for the Week (May 4): Salisbury remained at number four in the nation after a pair of wins this week. The Gulls opened the week with a 15-4 win over Washington on Wednesday and followed that up with a 16-6 win over Rowan on Saturday. In the win over Washington, Linda Ackermann and Liz Funk scored three goals each. Ackermann scored her three in the first half while Amber Stansbury scored twice as the Gulls led 7-2 at the half. In the win over Rowan, Ackermann scored five goals and sophomore Lynsey Bateman added three tallies as Salisbury closed out the regular season with their ninth straight win. Salisbury fell behind 4-1 early on against the Profs but the Gulls went on an 8-0 run to seize control of the game. Sarah Slafkosky finished the game with two goals and two assists while goalie Ali Goetz finished with a season-high 17 saves in goal. St. Mary’s won their lone game this past week, defeating Frostburg State, 13-6. Freshman Danielle Miller scored four goals in the victory for the Seahawks. The Seahawks were selected as a participant in this year’s NCAA Tournament. It is the fourth consecutive season in the NCAA post-season for SMC and the sixth in the past seven years. Goucher’s Kate Howell closed out her four seasons with the Gophers in style by scoring a career-high seven goals and picking up a pair of assists in the season-ending 20-6 victory over Dickinson. The senior attack concluded her career with 166 goals and 57 assists, making her one of only four players in school history to surpass the 200 point plateau in her career.

Women’s Lacrosse Notes for the Week (April 27): Salisbury, the fourth ranked team in the nation, won its fourth CAC Championship in five years as the Sea Gulls downed St. Mary’s, the seventh ranked team in the nation, 15-8 in the championship game. Midfielder Linda Ackermann scored three goals and five other Sea Gulls scored twice. Salisbury extended their win streak to seven games. Trailing 6-4 late in the first half, Salisbury went on an 8-0 run overlapping the two halves to seize control of the game. The Gulls scored three times in the final 1:33 of the half including the go-ahead goal by Lynsey Bateman with two seconds left before the half, taking the 7-6 lead at the intermission. The Sea Gulls outshot the Seahawks 46-22 and Ali Goetz finished with ten saves for Salisbury. Earlier in the week, Mary Washington gave the Sea Gulls all they wanted before Salisbury pulled out a 9-8 win in the CAC semifinals. Liz Funk and Sarah Stafkosky led the Gulls as they each scored a pair of goals. Goetz recorded nine saves for Salisbury. St. Mary’s loss to #4 Salisbury in the conference championship was the Seahawks second championship game appearance in the last three seasons. Junior midfielder Sarah Sloane scored her 100th career goal in the 18-6 CAC semifinal win over Goucher. The Seahawks have one final regular season contest remaining and then will await word on the upcoming NCAA tournament. The Seahawks are looking for their fourth consecutive bid and the fifth in the last six seasons. Virginia Wesleyan snapped CUA’s four-game win streak on Thursday with a 10-3 win at DuFour Field. The Cardinals then fell 18-7 at tenth ranked Washington & Lee on Saturday. Senior Ali Jarden netted four goals against W&L on Saturday, raising her team-leading total to 26.

Women’s Lacrosse Notes for the Week (April 20): Salisbury’s junior midfielder Linda Ackermann scored four goals and senior attacker Jessica White added three goals as #4 ranked Salisbury downed Villa Julie 22-3 in a non-conference game on Thursday. Thirteen different players scored at least once for Salisbury who jumped to an early 4-0 lead and led 14-1 at the half. Salisbury extended its winning streak to five games. Four Sea Gulls-Sarah Slafkosky, Emily Dutch, Erin McCarthy, and Amber Stansbury-each tallied two goals in the win. St. Mary’s won their lone contest this past week, defeating #12 Mary Washington, 8-7. The Seahawks have won at least ten games in each of the past four seasons and are 55-12 over that period. Senior midfielder Carol Schmoeller leads the team in scoring with 34 goals and 22 assists for 56 total points. Schmoeller also has three game-winning goals to her credit this season, including the one in the win over MWC on Friday. Goucher’s Ashley Sudbrook, who ranked third in Division III in caused turnovers with an average of 3.75 per game, forced eight turnovers in Goucher’s 15-7 win over Susquehanna. Kate Howell became only the fourth player in the history of Goucher’s women’s lacrosse program to attain 200 points during her career with a four-goal, one-assist performance in the Gophers’ 9-7 triumph over Catholic. The third-seeded Gophers also faced the Cardinals in the opening round of the CAC tournament, winning 14-9 as Ashley Snyder scored six goals and added a pair of assists to the victory. Mary Washington, ranked 12th in the nation, rebounded from a one goal loss to St. Mary’s on Friday to top Marymount 15-1 in the CAC quarterfinals. Britt Gottlieb scored twice against St. Mary’s and four times against Marymount to pace the Eagle offense in both games. Marymount juniors Kerry Adler and Beth Horrigan finished their season #2 and #3 in career scoring, respectively. Adler has increased her offensive number each season and now has 88 goals and 43 assists. The 43 assists ties her for the top spot at MU. Horrigan has 81 goals and 40 assists for her career. Goalkeeper Rachel Sybor, also a junior, sets the career mark for saves in each game she plays. Sybor now has 564 and owns the school record for lowest career GAA at 10.95. Catholic has lost five of their last six heading into the CAC tournament where the Cardinals dropped a 14-9 decision to Goucher. Ali Jarden, the team’s lone senior, scored 11 goals in three games to raise her team lead to 48 goals.

Women’s Lacrosse Notes for the Week (April 13): Salisbury, ranked fourth in the nation, wrapped up the regular season CAC championship with two league wins this past week. The Gulls began the week with an 18-4 win over Mary Washington. Linda Ackermann, Amber Stansberry, and Jessica White each scored three times while Lynsey Bateman, Liz Funk, Sarah Slafkosky, and Erin McCarthy each scored twice. In the win over St. Mary’s, Bateman scored four goals while Ackermann and Stansberry each scored twice. Ackermann and White each added a pair of assists. St. Mary’s went 2-1 this past week, all in conference play. The loss to Salisbury was the second consecutive regular season home loss for the Seahawks, who had won 25 in a row at home before the loss last week at #2 TCNJ. The loss against Salisbury was also the third for the Seahawks this season, with all coming against teams currently in the top five in the nation. Senior midfielder Carol Schmoeller leads the team in scoring with 33 goals and 20 assists for 53 total points. The 11th ranked Mary Washington College Eagles split their two games this week, falling to Salisbury before topping Lynchburg. In the win over the Hornets, senior attacker Jess Goon scored a career-high six goals and nine points. Goon leads MWC with 33 goals and 22 assists for 55 points. Goucher raised its record this season against non-conference opponents in Gopher Stadium to 5-1 by pulling away in the second half for a 13-10 victory over Frostburg State. Kate Howell contributed six goals and an assist to the victory, boosting her career point total to 197, leaving her on the verge of joining Kristen Carey (1995-98), Courtney Crangi (1993, 1995-96), and Lauren Manekin (1999-2002) as the only players in the history of Goucher’s women’s lacrosse program to attain 200 career points. Howell also had two goals and a pair of assists in the Gophers’ 11-7 loss to St. Mary’s. Marymount junior Beth Horrigan had a career-high six goals in the Saints come-from-behind win over College of Notre Dame. She also had two assists in the win. Horrigan also tallied two goals in the loss to Virginia Wesleyan to raise her point total for the week to 10. Goalkeeper Rachel Sybor had 35 saves in the two games.

Women’s Lacrosse Notes for the Week (April 6): Salisbury remained ranked #4 this past week as they were 2-0 for the week. Sophomore attacker Lynsey Bateman finished with three goals and one assist and midfielders Amber Stansbury and Linda Ackermann added three goals each as Salisbury downed Randolph-Macon 18-3 on Tuesday. On Saturday, sophomore Erin McCarthy scored three goals and added one assist as Salisbury built an 11-0 lead in the first 20 minutes and then cruised to a 16-6 victory over Frostburg St. Senior Jessica White, along with junior Sarah Slatkosky, junior Emily Dutch and Stansbury each added a pair of goals. St. Mary’s lost their lone contest this past week as they fell to #3 College of New Jersey 19-7. The loss snapped a 25-game regular season home win streak for the Seahawks, who lost at home for the first time during the regular season since a 9-8 setback to Randolph-Macon on April 9, 2001. Freshman Danielle Miller scored two goals and added one assist in the loss to TCNJ. Goucher’s Ashley Snyder scored a career-high seven goals including the 100th of her collegiate career, and Kate Howell moved into fourth place in career points at Goucher in leading the Gophers to a 16-10 non-conference victory over Randolph-Macon. Snyder also picked up a pair of assists in the win to finish with nine points. With her three goal, two assist performance, Howell passed Michele Mohlman (1993-96) for fourth place in the career points as her total grew to 186. Mary Washington, ranked 10th in the nation, won three games this week to improve to 7-4 overall. Senior Jess Goon had ten goals and six assists in the three wins as she leads the team with 27 goals and 19 assists, good for 46 total points. Marymount’s junior goalkeeper Rachel Sybor became the school’s career leader in save this week. She had 39 saves this week to give her a career total of 491 in just under three years of play, surpassing the old mark of 471, set by Susan Schoenberg.

Women’s Lacrosse Notes for the Week (March 30): In a battle between two top-five Division III teams, #1 ranked Middlebury withstood a second half rally by #5 Salisbury to register a 7-5 non-conference win on Tuesday. Sophomore Lynsey Bateman had a hand in all five Salisbury scores as she finished with three goals and two assists. Salisbury goalie Ali Goetz finished the game with 13 saves, including 10 in the second half. St. Mary’s came from behind to beat #6 Williams College in overtime on Sunday, 8-6. Senior Carol Schmoeller scored five goals, including both goals in overtime, and added one assist in the win. The Seahawks are now 2-1 on the season against teams ranked in the top ten and have #3 College of New Jersey at home this Sunday. Goucher finished off a difficult stretch of playing three nationally ranked Division III opponents in a span of eight days with a 2-1 record when the Gophers knocked off #9 Mary Washington College, 13-10. Kate Howell scored five times against the Eagles and added six more goals in the Gophers’ 15-6 triumph over Marymount, boosting her season total to 34 goals. The senior attacker now ranks fourth in career goals at Goucher with 138. Catholic had Virginia Wesleyan snap the Cardinals’ four-game win streak on Thursday with a 10-3 win at DuFour Field. The Cardinals, then fell, 18-7, at tenth ranked Washington & Lee on Saturday. Senior Ali Jarden netted four goals against W&L on Saturday to raise her team-leading total to 26. Marymount junior Beth Horrigan became the third Saint this season to go over 100 career points. Horrigan tallied two goals and had one assist in the loss to Goucher to reach 102 career points. Earlier in the week, during the Saints’ 10-6 win over Villa Julie, Horrigan had three goals and two assists.

Women’s Lacrosse Notes for the Week (March 23): Salisbury, ranked fourth in the nation, improved to 5-1 for the season with a pair of victories this past week. Salisbury defeated league foes Marymount 13-3 and Goucher 21-9. Amber Stansbury scored seven goals in the two games while Linda Ackermann managed six. Lynsey Bateman and Jessica White each had five goals in the pair of wins. St. Mary’s beat Roanoke in their only game last week, 13-8. Senior Carol Schmoeller scored two goals and added three assists in the win, surpassing the 100 career assist plateau. Schmoeller now has 102 career assists. The Seahawks were ranked eighth in last week’s IWLCA poll. Mary Washington, ranked eighth in the nation, dropped a 13-9 decision to defending national champion Amherst, and then bounced back to top #10 Washington & Lee on the road, 7-6. Junior Britt Gottlieb led the Eagles in scoring with two goals and two assists against Amherst and two goals and one assist against Washington & Lee. Goucher split a pair of games against nationally ranked Division III opponents last week. The Gophers jumped out to a 7-1 lead at the half and then held on to defeat #19 Stevens Tech, but the Gophers had their three-game winning streak stopped by #4 Salisbury, losing to the Gulls 21-9. Marymount won their first game of the season with an 18-6 victory over Bridgewater. Kerry Adler led all scorers with five goals and three assists. Ashley Natoli added three goals and three assists. Adler became the fourth Saint to over 100 career points as she now has 103 career points. Catholic won its fourth straight in Saturday’s 14-8 win over Lynchburg. Senior Ali Jarden and junior Kristen Wisniewski each scored four times in the win. Earlier in the week, Jarden netted five goals to help down Susquehanna. The Cardinals are now 3-0 at home and 4-0 when they score 10 or more goals.

Women’s Lacrosse Notes for the Week (March 16): Salisbury, the fourth ranked team in the country, dropped its first game of the season on Saturday as the College of New Jersey Lions defeated the Gulls 13-8. TCNJ broke a 5-5 halftime tie and Salisbury wasn’t able to recover. Junior midfielder Linda Ackermann led Salisbury with three goals and now has a team-leading 12 goals and 14 points. Sophomore Lynsey Bateman added a pair of goals to bring her season total to eight goals and 12 points. Sophomore Ali Goetz registered 17 saves for the Gulls, allowing 13 goals in 60 minutes of action. St. Mary’s went 2-0 this past week with wins over Catholic and Randolph-Macon. The Seahawks were ranked eighth in last week’s IWLCA poll. Senior Carol Schmoeller scored five goals and added three assists in the two wins for the week. With her next assist, Schmoeller will have 100 for her career. Senior Jen Chumley recorded a 4.50 goals against average this week with 17 saves in the two wins. Mary Washington, the ninth ranked team in the country, fell to #5 Gettysburg 12-7 before topping Randolph-Macon 16-6 later in the week. In the RMC game, Jess Goon scored a career-high eight points on four goals and four assists. Goucher’s Ashley Snyder matched her career-high for goals in a game by scoring six times in Goucher’s 24-8 victory over Villa Julie. In the Gophers’ 13-4 triumph over Christopher Newport, goalkeeper Laura Webbert made 15 saves and allowed only four goals. Marymount lost their two games in Orlando, FL this week including one to Division II East Stroudsburg. Senior Casey Smith scored her 100th career point against Geneseo as she scored four goals in the loss. Catholic’s Ali Jarden scored a game-high six goals to lead Catholic to a 16-7 win over Christopher Newport. The senior leads the team in goals (13) and points (17).

Women’s Lacrosse Notes for the Week (March 8): Five Salisbury players scored two goals each to lead the fourth-ranked Sea Gulls to a 13-7 win over #15 Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. Midfielders Sarah Slafkosky and Linda Ackermann, along with attackers Amber Stansbury, Liz Funk, and Jessie White all tallied two goals apiece for Salisbury as the Gulls led 5-1 at the half. Sophomore goalie Ali Goetz recorded 13 saves for Salisbury. Mary Washington, the ninth ranked squad in the nation, opened the season with a pair of wins in St. Croix this week. Junior Erica Larsen leads MWC in scoring with seven goals while senior Jess Goon has scored five goals to go along with three assits. St. Mary’s went 2-1 this past week with victories over Villa Julie (25-2) and College of Notre Dame (20-4) before falling on the road at #7 Gettysburg (10-9). The Seahawks were ranked eighth in last week’s IWLCA poll. Junior Sarah Sloane tallied 10 goals and added one assist for the week while junior Karli Libertini scored five goals and recorded 15 assists in the three games. Goucher began the 2004 season with a 13-5 win over McDaniel. Kate Howell led the Gophers with four goals and three assists in the win. It was the Gophers’ fifth straight win over the Green Terror. Howell notched four more goals in the loss to Messiah.
