CAC Women's Soccer News and Notes:
Women’s Soccer Notes for the Week:
Mary Washington won the CAC Championship for the 11th time last
week, defeating top-seeded Salisbury 1-0 in the semifinals and second-seeded
York 2-1 in overtime in the championship match. Kathryn
Amirpashaie scored the goal in the win over Salisbury.
She then tied the championship game with just 17 seconds remaining
in regulation to force overtime. Joeann Walker scored
the championship-winning goal with 1:02 remaining in the first overtime.
The Eagles advanced to the NCAA tournament for the third straight
year and the 11th time overall. The Eagles won a pair of games in
the NCAA tournament as they defeated Cabrini 2-1 on Wednesday followed
by a 1-0 win over host Messiah on Friday. Jessica Hewitt
scored the game winner for the Eagles in the victory over Messiah.
Playing their third game in four days, MWC fell to College of New
Jersey 5-1 in the regional finals with Hewitt scoring the Eagles’
goal. The Eagles closed the season out with a record of 12-6-5 and
improve their all-time NCAA wins total to 12 in 11 appearances.
York College fell to Mary Washington in their first championship
appearance in the eight-year history of the Spartan women’s
soccer program. Senior Maria Chesnavage ended her
career as the Spartans’ all-time leading scorer with 86 points
on 35 goals and 16 assists. She has played in 71 career games and
she has a school-record 14 game-winning goals. Fellow senior
Jodi Redcay leaves YCP as the second all-time leading scorer
with 76 points on 23 goals and 30 assists. The 30 assists are a
school-record. The Spartans had 14 players score at least one goal
with nine having two or more goals this season. York had 20 players
record at least one point during the season. The senior class of
Chesnavage, Redcay, Ashli Phillips, and Jen
Siegel finished their careers with a four-year record of
47-24-4 (.659), the best four-year mark in the eight-year history
of the Spartan program. Salisbury’s Thea Zygmunt led
the Sea Gulls with seven goals this season. She also added two assists.
Sara Nickoles was second with five goals and led
the team with three assists. Senior Kathleen Tiedemann
had four goals this season and she ended her career with 39 career
goals, good for second on the Gulls’ all-time list. With ties
as the official outcomes of both of its CAC playoff games, Goucher
finished above .500 for the first time since 1995. One season after
scoring 10 goals over the course of 18 games, the Gophers established
new school records for goals (49), assists (37), and points (135)
in a season. Catholic was selected to play in the ECAC Mid-Atlantic
Championship and the Cardinals fell to Gwynedd-Mercy 4-0 in the
first round. The Cardinals eclipsed the school-record for wins in
a season which was set last year (12) with their 14-5-1 campaign
of 2003. The berth in the 2003 ECAC Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament
was the first tournament berth in CUA’s women’s soccer
history.
Women’s Soccer Notes for the Week:
Salisbury opened the CAC tournament with an 8-0 win over Gallaudet
in the quarterfinal round. Senior Kathleen Tiedemann
and junior Thea Zygmunt each scored two goals and
added an assist. Earlier in the week, Salisbury closed out their
regular season with a 4-0 win over Villa Julie. Dana Verdi,
Zygmunt, Brandi Sproul, and Natalie Day
each scored in the win. Goalie Katie Hendrickson
earned the shutout with a pair of saves. Zygmunt has seven goals
this season to lead the Sea Gulls. York split their two games this
week as they fell to Marymount 2-1 in double overtime on Thursday
before eliminating the Saints from the tournament thanks to Sunday’s
1-0 win. Jodi Redcay dished out an assist in the
loss while she scored the lone goal of the game in the quarterfinal
win. Freshman Amanda Lomberg picked up her fourth
shutout of the year on Sunday. Catholic earned the number three
seed in the CAC tournament with their 2-1 win over MWC on Tuesday.
However, the Cardinals were knocked out of the tournament by Goucher,
4-3 on penalty kicks. Catholic will look for an ECAC Mid-Atlantic
bid this week. Mary Washington topped St. Mary’s 2-0 in the
CAC tournament quarterfinals on Sunday. Sophomore Jacqui
Forsythe added to her team lead with her eighth goal of
the season to give the Eagles the 1-0 lead, and sophomore Sarah
Campbell added a header in the second half for the final
margin. The Eagles will visit Salisbury on Wednesday. The two teams
have combined to win every CAC title since the advent of the conference
in 1991. St. Mary’s won their final regular season match,
a 3-0 win over College of Notre Dame. Sophomore Julie Hill
scored the game-winning goal for the Seahawks. St. Mary’s
lost their first round game to Mary Washington 2-0. It marks the
second consecutive year that the Eagles have eliminated the Seahawks
by a score of 2-0. Goucher advanced past the opening round of the
CAC playoffs for the first time since 1999 but had to win a shootout
to do it. The best-of-five shootout was tied at three heading into
the final round when Lindsey Henley found the back of the net on
her attempt to give the Gophers a 4-3 lead. The Catholic attempt
hit the cross bar and the Gophers advanced to face YCP in the tournament
semifinals. Marymount won their first overtime game of the year
when they defeated York 2-1 in double overtime on Thursday. The
Saints couldn’t make it two-in-a-row over York as the Spartans
defeated MU 1-0 in the quarterfinals. Goalkeeper Stephanie
Kerr was outstanding in goal in the tournament game as
she made 15 saves. Gallaudet won its regular season finale with
a 4-1 win over Columbia Union. Gallaudet was without leading scorer
Justin Peloso but received two goals from Dana
Sipek.
Women’s Soccer Notes for the Week:

of goals midway through the second half to forge the tie. Rachel
Tansey dropped in both goals for the Sea Gulls. Sophomore
Katie Hendrickson had nine saves in the match for
the Gulls. Thea Zygmunt tallied two goals while
Holly Sis and Jeanine Swezey each

Salisbury outshot Notre Dame 37-3 in the game. York won a pair of
games this week to extend their unbeaten streak to six (4-0-2).
The Spartans had four different players score at least two goals
for the week including freshman Lauren Castanio
who notched a hat-trick in the 11-0 win at Columbia Union. Freshman

last six matches. St. Mary’s closes out the regular season
with a home match against College of Notre Dame on Thursday. Catholic
set a new record for wins in a season at 13 after their Tuesday
victory over Gallaudet. Last year’s team, which set the previous
mark, finished 12-5 in 2002. Goucher’s Taryn Westendorf
scored a goal in both of the Gophers’ wins last week to become
only the third player in school history to reach 20 goals for her
career. An unassisted goal by Westendorf at 25:52 provided the Gophers
with a 1-0 lead over Catholic which held up until Katie
Miller tallied her team-leading 13th goal of the season
at 85:19. With 47 goals through 16 games, the Gophers have established
a new school record for the most goals in a season. The former mark
of 45 was set in 1994. Marymount has lost five games this season
by one goal, two of those games in overtime. But the Saints have
doubled their win total from last year with one regular season game
remaining. Gallaudet has a big week ahead as the Bison face Trinity
and Columbia Union College. The Bison defeated Columbia Union earlier
this year and posted its lone victory of the season while Trinity
needed overtime to down Columbia Union.

in the Trinity game with her seventh shutout of the season. Gallaudet
