Named CAC Athletes of the Week

Mike Welch (Claymont, DE/Brandywine), Sarah Galloway (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame), Scott Simmons (Silver Spring,MD/Springbrook), Beth Horrigan (Baltimore,MD/Maryvale Prep), Nick Pennington (Baltimore,MD/Towson), Kim Colwell (Wellesley,MA/Wellesley), Tim Robinson (Cinnaminson,NJ/Cinnaminson), and Megan Linn (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) were named Capital Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week for their performance during the week of March 22-28, 2004.
Welch, a sophomore outfielder/designated hitter from York College, had an outstanding individual week to earn the CAC baseball player of the week award Welch led the Spartans to a 3-1 week including a pair of CAC wins over St. Mary’s. For the week, he hit .556 (10-18) with 12 RBIs, seven runs scored, one double, and two homers. He had a slugging percentage of .944 and an on-base percentage of .579. His biggest game for the week came in the win over Susquehanna as he was 3-for-5 with six RBIs, two runs scored, a double and a home run. Welch ran his hit streak to 19 games dating back to last season and he is now hitting .480 in 2004. For the season, Welch leads the Spartans in batting average, RBIs (31), homers (6), and runs scored (23).
Galloway, a junior pitcher/first baseman from Catholic, paced the Cardinals to a 5-1 record on the week, including the squad’s first two CAC wins on the season to earn the CAC softball player of the week. Galloway went 12-for-20 in six games with three home runs and 10 RBI. Her first longball of the week accounted for CUA’s only runs in a 2-1 win at Randolph-Macon. She then went 4-for-4 with three runs and four RBI in a 17-2 win over Gallaudet. She capped off the week with a 3-for-3 effort with three RBI and her third homer to help CUA earn a sweep over Mary Baldwin. On the season, Galloway leads the Cardinals in batting (.450), home runs (6), and RBI (19). She is also 6-5 on the hill with 51 strikeouts, including a one-hitter in the first game against Gallaudet, striking out five.
Simmons, a senior attacker from Salisbury, had an outstanding week for the nation’s defending champion in Division III lacrosse, as he helped the Sea Gulls remain unbeaten and ranked #1 to earn the CAC men’s lacrosse player of the week. Simmons tallied a season-high seven goals to lead Salisbury to a 20-12 victory of Whittier on Saturday. He scored three times in the opening period and three more times in the second quarter as well. For the season, Simmons has 23 goals and 15 assists for 35 points.
Horrigan, a junior attacker from Marymount, became the fifth player in MU history to notch 100 career points, the second to accomplish it in her junior season as she has been named the CAC women’s lacrosse player of the week award. Her three point performance in the game against Goucher put her at 102 career points. She also had three goals and two assists in the win over Villa Julie earlier in the week. For the season, Horrigan has 23 points on 17 goals and six assists.
Robinson, a junior thrower from Salisbury, had an outstanding individual meet to earn the CAC men’s track and field athlete of the week. Robinson won the javelin event with a throw of 177’8” to help the Sea Gulls finish eighth out of 29 teams at the Georgia Tech Track Classic on Saturday. He registered the school’s only event victory on the day.
Colwell, a senior tennis player from Mary Washington, helped the Eagles win three of four matches, including three against Division III opponents over the weekend to earn the CAC women’s tennis player of the week award.. Kim had an excellent week, winning a #1 singles against Meredith 6-1, 6-2 and winning against Muhlenberg at #2 6-0, 6-0. She also swept her doubles matches over the weekend, winning all three of her matches with teammate Ashley Tucker at #1 doubles.
Pennington, a junior tennis player from St. Mary’s College, helped lead the Seahawks to their first win of the season to earn the CAC men’s tennis player of the week award. Pennington won his first match of the season at the number two singles spot against Villa Julie by defeating Doug Ammon 6-3, 6-2. Pennington also teamed up with freshman Sean Crouse to win the number two doubles match against VJC, winning 8-1.
Linn, a freshman thrower from Mary Washington, had an outstanding weekend to earn the CAC women’s track and field athlete of the week award. Linn began the weekend at the Battleground Relays by breaking her own personal best in the hammer throw by nearly 15 feet, with a throw of 117 feet, two inches. On Saturday, she won the discus event with a throw of 119 feet, four inches.
