Puglisi, Lister, Arnold, Howell, Uyar, Barndt, and Johnson
Named CAC Athletes of the Week

Andy Puglisi (Arlington, VA/Bishop O’Connell), Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline), Andy Arnold (Duxbury, MA/Bridgton Academy), Kate Howell (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley), Dan Uyar (Bay Shore, NY/St. Anthony’s), Carolyn Barndt (Pennsburg, PA/Perkiomen), and Justin Johnson (High Bridge, NJ/Voorhees) were named Capital Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week for their performance during the week of March 1-7, 2004.
Puglisi, a sophomore outfielder from York College, led the Spartans to five straight wins in Florida to earn the CAC baseball player of the week award. Puglisi hit .500 (12-24) for the week as he drove in 10 runs, scored three, had two doubles and one home run. His one homer tied the game against Wartburg, the 20th ranked team in the country, in the bottom of the 11th, extending the game to the 12th were the Spartans eventually won the game. For the season, Puglisi is hitting .415 with a team-high five doubles and 11 RBIs.
Lister, a sophomore pitcher from Salisbury University, picked up five wins for the week to earn the CAC softball player of the week award. Lister began her week with a one-hit shutout of Gallaudet in the Sea Gulls’ conference opener. She notched 15 strikeouts in the win. Lister then won all four of Salisbury’s games in the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament, recording 28 strikeouts in the four games as she did not allow a run in the tournament.
Arnold, a senior attackman from Salisbury University, led the top-ranked Sea Gulls to a pair of wins to earn the CAC men’s lacrosse player of the week award. Arnold notched six goals in the win over Ohio Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon and three goals and two assists in the conference win over Goucher. The Sea Gulls remain unbeaten at 4-0 including 2-0 in the CAC.
Howell, a senior attacker from Goucher College, had a outstanding individual week to earn the CAC women’s lacrosse player of the week award. In the Gophers’ season-opening win, Howell had four goals and three assists as Goucher downed McDaniel 13-5. In the tough 14-12 loss to Messiah, Howell tallied four goals. Howell is currently ranked fifth in career assists at Goucher with 39.
Uyar, a senior tennis player from Mary Washington College, led the Eagles during their successful west coast trip to earn the CAC men’s tennis player of the week award. Uyar went 3-0 in singles during the trip as MWC won four of five matches in California including two over nationally ranked opponents. Uyar also went 2-1 at number one doubles.
Barndt, a junior women’s tennis player from St. Mary’s, remained unbeaten on the season to earn the CAC women’s tennis player of the week award. Bardnt recorded two individual wins and two number two doubles victories for the week. In the team loss to Washington, Barndt won the number five singles match 6-3, 7-5 while she teamed with Norah Harwood to win the number two doubles match 8-3. In the win over Virginia Wesleyan, Barndt won the sixth singles match 6-3, 6-1 while she again teamed with Harwood to win the third doubles match.
Johnson, a senior runner from Salisbury University, opened the season in solid fashion to earn the CAC men’s track and field athlete of the week. Johnson won the 400-hurdles with a time of :57.4 and was second in the high hurdles as the Sea Gulls performed well in the Salisbury University Opener on Saturday.
