Named CAC Athletes of the Week


Bernie Dennis (Arlington, VA/Bishop O’Connell), Erin Ruest (Waldorf, MD/McDonough), Dan Korpon (Annapolis, MD/Severna Park), Kate Howell (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley), Dan Uyar (Bay Shore, NY/St. Anthony’s), Sean Duggan (Spring Lake, NJ/CBA) and Natalie Williams (Baltimore, MD/Mount de Sales Academy) were named CAC Athletes of the Week for the week of April 26-May 2, 2004.
Bernie Dennis, a senior catcher/pitcher from Catholic University, earned CAC baseball player of the week honors after he fired a one-hit, complete game shutout over Rutgers-Camden on Thursday, then went 3-for-4 with 4 runs and an RBI on Friday. Dennis fanned five and walked six in the Cardinals 4-0 win over Rutgers-Camden, then contributed to the Cardinals high-powered offense with his three hits in their 18-4 rout of Columbia Union.
Erin Ruest, a sophomore pitcher/third basemen from Salisbury University, garnered CAC softball player of the week honors after she went 4-for-5 with three doubles, two RBI and two runs against Gettysburg. Ruest also picked up her fifth win of the season in the same game as she tossed 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Ruest then followed up her performance by going 2-for-4 and drove in another run in the second game of the doubleheader, as Salisbury shutout Gettysburg to a 2-0 tune. Ruest finished 6-for-9 (.667) at the plate for the week.
Dan Korpon, a junior goalie from Salisbury University, earned CAC men’s lacrosse player of the week after he recorded 11 saves to backstop the defending national champs to complete their perfect regular season with a 21-7 win over previously unbeaten and #2-ranked Washington. Korpon finished the campaign with the lowest GAA in NCAA Division III with a 5.34 GAA as the Gulls finished the regular season 16-0.
Kate Howell, a senior attacker from Goucher College, won CAC women’s lacrosse player of the week after she scored a career-high seven goals and added a pair of assists in her final game in a Goucher uniform as the Gophers defeated Dickinson 20-6 in the contest. In her four seasons for the Gophers, Howell tallied 166 goals and 57 assists, making her just the fourth player in school history to surpass 200 career points.
Dan Uyar, a senior men’s tennis player from Mary Washington, won men’s tennis player of the week honors after he won both of his number one doubles matches and followed by sweeping both his #4 singles matches as well. Dan is a two-time All-American in doubles with two different partners- Kevin Loden last year and Paul Bristow this year.
Sean Duggan, a junior thrower from Catholic University, won CAC men’s track and field athlete of the week honors after he successfully defended his two titles at the Mason-Dixon Championships. Duggan broke his own record in the hammer throw, which he originally set last year. He also shattered a 21-year old meet record in the shot put. Duggan will compete at the Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 27-29.
Natalie Williams, a senior thrower from Goucher College, won CAC women’s track and field athlete of the week honors after she defended her title in the hammer throw at the Patriot Open by outperforming 11 Division I athletes. Williams’ winning toss was 158’9”. She was recently named 2004 CAC Women’s Track & Field Athlete of the Year.
