What is Enterprise in El Salvador?

SIFE has created a business relationship with an artisan woman named Amparito, who lives in a poor community in El Salvador called Nehemias. Amparito makes hammocks for a living, but she does not have much of a market to sell them to in El Salvador. Last year, we helped Amparito increase her productivity by purchasing a new rope-making machine for her to use. We also placed an order for 30 hammocks to be made in York College colors that we have transported to the United States and will be selling this fall. A fundraising and awareness dinner will be held on Saturday, September 13th 2008 to begin selling the hammocks. Future plans include finding a constant outlet for the hammocks, testing price points, planning new fundraising events, and determining how many to order from Amparito each year. All profits from the hammock operation are sent directly back El Salvador to support the community of Nehemias.

What are the student roles?

SIFE students have the opportunity to build this business from the ground up in almost all aspects. This team will meet often to discuss the current state of the project and to brainstorm for the future. It is recommended that students on this team travel to El Salvador in January (trip described above) to visit Amparito and find more ways to help her and the community of Nehemias. This team works closely with the El Salvador Leadership Seminar team, and most members participate in both projects. If a SIFE member wants to help with one of the El Salvador projects, this one is much more suitable for someone who is not able to travel to El Salvador in January. 5-7 more students are needed for this project.
