York SIFE brought financial awareness to adults through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). VITA provides free income tax preparation to low income families and individuals. SIFE members complete training and earn certification as income tax preparers. Our SIFE team partnered with the United Way last year to reach a record number for returns completed, as well as money refunded through returns. For the 2007 filing season, VITA completed over 2,000 tax returns, while netting over 1.8 million dollars in client refunds. What are the student roles? VITA members are required to go through training late in the fall semester to become a certified income tax preparer. After training is complete, an official IRS test must be passed. In the spring semester, the team members volunteer at a VITA site around York to complete tax returns. This project is ideal for accounting students. As many students as possible are needed for this project.
